The Arms Museum, Bolívar Sugar Mill / San Mateo - Venezuela [ENG-ESP]

Greetings, travelers! In my previous post I showed you the Sugar Cane Museum, and this time I continue my tour of Ingenio Bolivar (Bolivar Sugar Mill) by inviting you to visit the second place you can see here, which is the Arms Museum.

¡Saludos, viajeros! En mi publicación anterior les mostré el Museo de la Caña de Azúcar, y en esta ocasión continúo con mi recorrido por el Ingenio Bolívar invitándolos a conocer el segundo lugar que pueden ver aquí, que es el Museo de Armas.

This museum is in front of the cane museum, across the road that goes to the center of the town of San Mateo. It is also an old mansion, recently completely restored like all this historical complex that belonged for 207 years to the family of the Liberator Simón Bolívar.

Este museo está frente al de la Caña, cruzando la carretera que va al centro del pueblo de San Mateo. Es también una vieja casona, restaurada por completo recientemente como todo este complejo histórico que perteneció durante 207 años a la familia del Libertador Simón Bolívar.

At the entrance there are beautiful gardens and several small cannons, a prelude to the arsenal that we can see inside.

En la entrada hay unos hermosos jardines y varios cañones pequeños, una antesala del arsenal que podemos ver adentro.

In the first room we found an exhibition of shotguns, they are mounted in showcases that have mirrored back and lighting, that is very good to see the complete weapon, but to take pictures is not very friendly, you see some reflections that overshadow the exposed.

En la primera sala nos encontramos con una exhibición de escopetas, están montadas en vitrinas que tienen espejo atrás y también iluminación, eso es muy bueno para poder ver el arma completa, pero para tomar fotos no es muy amigable, se ven unos reflejos que opacan lo expuesto.

The shotguns look very well preserved, it is a pity that there was a lack of information in the museography, when I went there they had not yet placed the signs indicating the data of each weapon, such as origin, year of manufacture, to whom it belonged, if it was used in any battle, etc, I asked and they told me that soon they would put them.

Las escopetas se ven muy bien conservadas, es una lástima que faltara información en la museografía, cuando fui aún no habían colocado los carteles que indicaran los datos de cada arma, como procedencia, año de fabricación, a quién perteneció, si fue utilizada en alguna batalla, etc, pregunté y me dijeron que pronto los pondrían.

While viewing the rooms, I also took a look at the ceilings of the house, they look great, as they were originally, it was one of the areas they took great care in during the recent restoration of these spaces.

Mientras veía las salas, también eché un vistazo a los techos de la casa, se ven geniales, como eran originalmente, fue una de las áreas en las que se esmeraron durante la reciente restauración de estos espacios.

As it is usual in colonial architecture houses, there is an internal patio, where some pieces used by the enslaved for agricultural work are exhibited and there are also posters that speak of the contributions of Africans to Venezuelan culture. Simón Bolívar requested the abolition of slavery to the Congress of Angostura in 1820, a petition that was accepted and was progressively applied throughout the national territory, although it was not until 1854 that it was included in the Constitution.

Como suele ser en las casas de arquitectura colonial, hay un patio interno, en él están exhibidas algunas piezas que usaban los esclavizados para labores agrícolas y también hay carteles que hablan de los aportes de los africanos a la cultura venezolana. Simón Bolívar solicitó la abolición de la esclavitud al Congreso de Angostura en 1820, petición que fue aceptada y se aplicó progresivamente en todo el territorio nacional, aunque no fue sino hasta 1854 que se incluyó en la Constitución.

We continued our tour through the rooms and saw the display of pistols. According to the guide, although there are some weapons used during the battle of San Mateo (1814), most are not from the time of the struggle for independence. There are rifles and blunderbusses that were brought to this museum in the 1940s, weapons that belonged to former presidents of Venezuela and others donated by the military.

Continuamos el recorrido por las salas y vimos la muestra de pistolas. Según contó el guía, aunque hay algunas armas usadas durante la batalla de San Mateo (1814), la mayoría no son de la época de la lucha por la independencia. Hay fusiles y trabucos naranjeros que fueron traídos a este museo en la década de 1940, armas que pertenecieron a ex presidentes de Venezuela y otras donadas por militares.

Of everything I saw, the most attractive to me were definitely the swords and sabers, because they have beautifully finished handles.

De todo lo que vi, lo más atractivo para mí definitivamente fueron las espadas y sables, porque tienen unos acabados bellísimos en sus empuñaduras.

The Arms Museum also has other objects on display such as paintings, books, coins, some uniforms and other military equipment. I think they must have a lot of things in storage because when I first came several years ago, I remember there were more, I guess after the restoration they are organizing everything for future exhibitions.

El Museo de Armas tiene también otros objetos en exhibición como cuadros, libros, monedas, algunos uniformes y otros equipamientos militares. Creo que deben tener muchas cosas guardadas porque cuando vine por primera vez hace varios años, recuerdo que había más, supongo que tras la restauración están organizando todo para futuras muestras.

And so ended the visit to this second space of the Historical House Museum Bolivar Sugar Mill, however our tour continued to the hill that is next door, where the family home of the Liberator is located and which was also the scene of a significant event in the struggle for the independence of Venezuela, but I will expand on that in the next publication 😉.

Y así terminó la visita a este segundo espacio del Museo Casa Histórica Ingenio Bolívar, sin embargo nuestro recorrido continuó hacia la colina que está al lado, donde se encuentra la casa familiar del Libertador y que además fue escenario de un hecho significativo en la lucha por la independencia de Venezuela, pero eso se los ampliaré en la próxima publicación 😉.
