In the Plaza de Armas, the first one founded in Havana when it was just a small village with few inhabitants, stands the Palacio de los Capitanes Generales (Palace of the Captains General). This majestic building was the place of residence of the governor who ruled the island during colonial times, who was the representative of the power of Spain over Cuba. Throughout the country's history, several governors lived here, and it even remained the residence of the presidents who ruled Cuba when the island ceased to be a Spanish dominion. With the change of regime and government, it was decided to restore it and turn it into a museum.
For years, the Palace has housed the City Museum, where an extensive collection of pieces that narrate the history of the island at different times is exhibited. For a long time it was also the headquarters of the office of the Historian of Havana, Eusebio Leal, a much loved and remembered figure for being the man who was responsible for the restoration of many of the historical sites, keeping alive the cultural heritage of Old Havana. His sculpture stands precisely at the entrance of the Palacio de los Capitanes Generales as an eternal sign of respect for his memory and all that he did for the city.
This majestic building occupies an entire city block and is built of stone with a wide portico carved with columns and arches. The symmetry of the repeated arches provides a remarkable elegance and beauty. This design is the one I like the most, and it is where I stop the longest to admire it in detail. That's why I took many photos from different angles of these large columns and their arches.
The main entrance is a wooden gate with metal studs, flanked by marble columns, and above it the Spanish coat of arms that takes us back to colonial times.
As we pass through the entrance, the first thing we see before our eyes is a large interior courtyard, open to the sky and very luminous. Everything around it is surrounded by high arcades and from the interior balconies on the upper floor there is a beautiful view of the courtyard from every angle. In its centre is a white marble statue of Christopher Columbus, the discoverer of America. It is guarded by two royal palms, Cuba's national tree, and by different species of ornamental plants that create a very fresh atmosphere and is a very pleasant sight as it gives life and splendour to the place with a touch of greenery.
From the various windows looking out you have a beautiful view of the Plaza de Armas, and the bay of Havana in the distance.
Another detail that distinguishes and enhances the architectural beauty of this Palace are the allegorical sculptures sculpted in marble that adorn the stairs, also made of marble, which creates an atmosphere of elegance with the polished white of this material.
The whole place is very beautiful, not only for its design, but also for the history that can be perceived in every detail. In the palace of the Captains General we can enjoy a charming journey through time and the different stages of the history of Cuba, it was a visit that I enjoyed very much and that I would like to repeat.

En la Plaza de Armas, la primera fundada en La Habana cuando apenas era una pequeña villa con pocos habitantes, se encuentra el Palacio de los Capitanes Generales. Este majestuoso edificio era el lugar de residencia del gobernador que regía en la isla durante la época colonial, el cual era el representante del poder de España sobre Cuba. A lo largo de la historia del país, varios gobernadores habitaron aquí, incluso siguió siendo la residencia de los presidentes que dirigieron Cuba cuando la isla dejó de ser un dominio español. Hasta que se decidió con el cambio de régimen y gobierno restaurarla y convertirla en museo.
Desde hace años, el Palacio alberga el Museo de la Ciudad, donde se exhibe una extensa colección de piezas que narran la historia en sus distintos momentos. Durante mucho tiempo también fue la sede de la oficina del Historiador de La Habana, Eusebio Leal, una figura muy querida y recordada por ser el hombre que logró la restauración de muchos de los sitios históricos, manteniendo vivo el patrimonio y cultural de La Habana Vieja. Su escultura se encuentra precisamente a la entrada del Palacio de los Capitanes Generales como muestra eterna de respeto a su memoria y todo lo que hizo por la ciudad.
Esta majestuosa edificación que ocupa toda una manzana está construida en piedra y cuenta con un amplio pórtico labrado de columnas y arcos. La simetría de los arcos repetidos proporciona una elegancia y belleza destacables. Este diseño es el que más me gusta, y es donde me detengo más tiempo para admirarlo en detalle. Por eso tomé muchas fotos desde diferentes ángulos de estas grandes columnas y sus arcos.
La entrada principal es un portón de madera con tachones metálicos, flanqueado por columnas de mármol, y encima el escudo español que nos remonta a la época colonial.
Al traspasar la entrada lo primero que vemos ante nuestra vista es un amplio patio interior, a cielo abierto y muy luminoso. Todo a su alrededor está rodeado de altas arcadas y desde los balcones interiores de la planta alta se tiene una bella vista del patio desde cualquier ángulo. En su centro hay una estatua de Cristóbal Colón, el descubridor de América, en mármol blanco. Está custodiada por dos palmas reales, árbol nacional de Cuba, y por diferentes especies de plantas ornamentales que crean un ambiente muy fresco y es una visión muy agradable ya que le da vida y esplendor al lugar con un toque de verdor.
Desde las diferentes ventanas que dan al exterior se tiene una bella visión de la Plaza de Armas, y de la bahía de La Habana en la distancia.
Otro detalle que distingue y realza la belleza arquitectónica de este Palacio son las esculturas alegóricas esculpidas en mármol que se encuentran adornando las escaleras también de mármol, lo que crea un ambiente de elegancia con el blanco pulido de este material.
Todo el lugar es muy hermoso y no solo por su diseño, sino por la historia que se puede percibir en cada detalle. En el palacio de los Capitanes Generales podemos disfrutar de un recorrido encantador a través del tiempo y las diferentes etapas de la historia de Cuba, fue una visita que disfruté mucho y que me gustaría volver a repetir.
