There are some days where you are just too knackered to cook... and there is no-one else to cook for, with the kids out and the wife away working... so, the choices are packet noodles or a quick takeaway. On this day, I had opted for a takeaway... after all, I was on the bike and I was going to be in the area anyway, so I may as well load up on some hot food so that I could put my feet up on the couch and relax without needing to worry about cooking something!
So, the main choices for takeaway in The Netherlands is fish and chips of some sort... or a Doner sort of thing. I was feeling all doner-ed out, so I opted for the fish and chips. So, how does "de Zeevruchten" (Fruits of the Sea) stack up as a takeaway?
The Space
Well... it is pretty much like any other fish and chip shop. There is a small area for eating with a few tables... but the whole thing is tiled and really not a the greatest sort of experience for eating at. I would much rather takeaway and eat in the comfort of my own home!
There is a nice selection of fish and various salads though... so that is quite promising!
The place is one of very few takeaways in a residential area and so it does receive quite a bit of traffic... so, don't expect to be served right away... especially if they are serving a local regular... who will just chat and chat and chat.... while you wait!
The Menu
This is not a paper menu sort of place! There is a menu billboard on the wall...
There is a wide variety of fish, with the choice of grilled or fried versions. Although, I did notice that not everything that they had on display was on the board... so just take that board with a grain of salt... and order what you want by actually choosing it from the display!
That said... if you aren't quite sure what to have... the menus are a pretty safe bet!
The Food
Well.... this is a relatively cheap takeaway meal and so I didn't have really high expectations for quality... and that expectation was suffiently met. Now part of the problem might have been that I had left it sitting in the container a bit long during the bike ride home... and so there were things that were a bit soggy... but I'm not sure that that was the only reason!
The salad was the stand-out... interesting and tasty... and seeingly freshly made. So, that was a step above the sort of thing that normally sits around for the whole day... unloved and unwanted!
The fish was a mixed bunch. I ordered the mixed menu (ha ha...), and the calamari was great! The rest... not as good as it could have been... the fish was decently cooked (the mussels overcooked), but the batter was quite oily.
The chips... were a dissapointment. They were really sogtgy... gross! Now, part of that might have been my fault... as they were steaming in the container during the bike ride... but even still...they shouldn't have been that mushy!
The Experience
As a take away... the food was tolerable. Nothing amazing, but not the best fish and chips that I've had. I might try the sit down option next time to see if it is any different.
However, takeaway is a balance between quality and laziness... and so when my laziness is high, then I can compromise on quality. This is definitely possible on that scale of perception then...
However, the other problem for this place is that... a short bike ride away in two directions, there are many more choices for takeaways... perhaps I will just go that little bit further next time.
