Okay... it is hard to even start to begin to explain how terrible the name of this place is! At least it isn't misleading... It is definitely a lunchroom and a bakery... but weirdly enough, the Bakery part is spelt in English rather than the Dutch way! However, they also serve Coffee... so, maybe a better name for the place would have been Lunchroom de Backery en Coffee (en Tea en Chocolates...)!
Okay... terrible names aside, the main thing that is important to a coffee addict is... is the coffee any good? They can call it whatever the hell they like... just feed me caffeine in a tasty and delicious warm package!
The Space
de Bakery is first and foremost... a bakery! Surprise! So, behind the counter you are going to find all sorts of dough based goods... all of which are made on site and are actually really quite good!
The seating is pretty limited... but due to the location of the lunchroom in a more residential area, on the weekdays it is not so full. There are retirement residences around, so don't be surprised to be surrounded by gray haired pensioners having their lunch get together plotting their next escape from their residences!
The lighting is nice and natural... due to the large full length windows on the outside walls, but in the darker months, there is lighting from the roof. I like how they have made panels instead of single lighting bars/points, it makes for a much more even lighting of the area.
There is outdoor seating, but I visited in the colder months... I'm just not that brave!
The Food
This was one of the little surrpises! I had come in here expecting nothing that special for the coffee... but it turns out that they make a really good cappucino! Even the Ponies were very impressed!
They also do takeaway versions, but if you have the time... it is much nicer to just sit and take teh time to enjoy the good stuff!
Everyone knows that it is dangerous to drink coffee on an empty stomach... or is that alcohol?
There are light lunches and snacks available (plus cakes!)... all of which use the bread that is cunningly disguised by the name of the Bakery! The bread is really quite good, and they make the tostis from decent ingredients... you won't be disappointed! Also, I love that they adopted the Spanish habit of serving crisps with it! Chippies!
The Experience
Sometimes, you just wander into a place because it is the only place around that serves coffee and a light snack... and you walk away having found a decent coffee top up spot in the place where you least expect it...
It is important to have these little go-to places... there is nothing worse than having terrible coffee... ever!
Drop by, you'll love the coffee... (plus the cakes are pretty awesome!).
