Marie Marche is a summer marketplace that sets up in the Plein of Den Haag roughly before the end of school and the long summer break. It is only there for a long weekend, and it is inspired by the summer markets of France... with stalls selling lots of interesting but overpriced crafts... through to some really very nice food that are served from little stalls. The very definition of street food!
The Space
There is a really self consciously artsy and fartsy vibe to the market... from the stalls selling craftwork... through to the types live music on display.
Unfortunately, an oversight of the market was the relatively few seats and tables for sitting down and eating in the "dining" area... plus the lack of cover from the Sun. Thankfully, we did find a city bench just outside of the market to eat... which also under the shade of some very nice trees... and just out of earshot of the woefully terrible music....
The Menu
There was a wide variety of things to get from each stall... some sold desserts... some pizzas... some coffees... some crepes... and some hot dogs... each stall had something different and unique to offer for the starving market crowd... it's all a point and click sort of affair... each stall had about 3-5 choices on offer!
.... however, was any of it good?
The Food
Two hot dogs... now, to the untrained eye, they just seem like normal hot dogs... however, the bottom one is a chorizo with fried crispy onion scattered on top. Chorizo is a Spanish slightly spicy sausage that is just jam packed full of taste... and coming straight off a coal BBQ... well, all I can say is WOW!
The top one is a Smokey American sausage... this was a little plainer than the chorizo (not spicy...), but it was still juicy and full of taste... nothing like the soggy tasting frankfurters that are normally boiled to death...
There was also a really good Marghertia pizza... but unfortunately the kids finished eating it before I remembered to take a photo. Rookie Mistake....
To round off the menu, there was a waffle with strawberries and cream from another stall... sadly, it was only just okay... I would have really preferred to have had crepes... but the kids really wanted this.... and as we all know, kids votes are worth twice as much as adult votes... even if they choose wrong.
The Experience
The food on offer was a wide range from pretty ordinary to pretty damn amazingly great for "street" food. We got lucky with the Hot Dogs and the pizza... but the waffle was a bit of a let down. I think that if we had gone for crepes, then that would ahave been an all round winner across the board! Next time...
Anyway, the seating situation for the market does need to be much better... cover from the midday Sun and more chairs/tables are an absolute must... especially if you have kids. We were just lucky to wander a little bit further away and find a shaded seating area... however, I'm not above eating whilst seated on the floor eiether!
