The city of The Liberator / La ciudad de El Libertador

A few days ago, on December 17, it was 192 years since the death of Simon Bolivar, The Liberator, the greatest historical figure of Venezuela and beyond, because he not only achieved the independence of his country, but also managed to get the Spanish crown out of Bolivia, Colombia, Panama, Ecuador and Peru. His heroic deed is in countless books, movies, series, etc., and some traces of his legacy can be felt when visiting the city that currently bears his name.

Hace unos días atrás, el 17 de diciembre, se cumplieron 192 años de la muerte de Simón Bolívar, El Libertador, la máxima figura histórica de Venezuela y más allá, porque no sólo consiguió la independencia de su país, también logró sacar a la corona española de Bolivia, Colombia, Panamá, Ecuador y Perú. Su gesta heróica está en infinidad de libros, películas, series, etc, y algunas huellas de su legado se pueden palpar al visitar la ciudad que actualmente lleva su nombre.

I went to Ciudad Bolivar (Bolivar City) some time ago to visit an uncle who lived there and in this post I bring some images that I hadn't shared in my blog. Located in the south of the country, this city is the capital of the largest state in Venezuela (242,801 km²), also called Bolivar in homage to the Father of the Homeland, as Simon is also considered. My tour began at the most popular place: the Orinoco Promenade, it measures about a kilometer and a half and you can enjoy views of the largest river in the country, the Orinoco.

Fui a Ciudad Bolívar hace tiempo para visitar a un tío que vivía allá y en esta publicación traigo algunas imágenes que no había compartido en mi blog. Ubicada al sur del país, esta urbe es la capital del estado más grande de Venezuela (242.801 km²), también llamado Bolívar en homenaje al Padre de la Patria, como también se le considera a Simón. Mi recorrido comenzó por el lugar más popular: el Paseo Orinoco, mide como kilómetro y medio y puedes deleitarte con vistas del río más grande del país, el Orinoco.

Cities with a port, whether sea or river, as in this case, seem attractive to me, they have a cosmopolitan air. Reading a little history I learned that since the arrival of the Spaniards, the Orinoco was very important for the exchange of goods with the main ports of the world. It is not strange then that the appearance of the buildings in Ciudad Bolivar is diverse, there are other influences there apart from the colonial architecture.

Las ciudades con puerto, ya sea mar o río, como en este caso, me parecen atractivas, tienen un aire cosmopolita. Leyendo un poco de historia supe que desde la llegada de los españoles, el Orinoco fue muy importante para el intercambio de mercancías con los principales puertos del mundo. No es extraño entonces que la apariencia de las edificaciones en Ciudad Bolívar sea diversa, hay otras influencias allí aparte de la arquitectura colonial.

Returning to the figure of the Liberator Simón Bolívar, in this city that was called Angostura while he lived, many things happened that determined the destiny of Venezuela. My uncle took me to the historic center to see some emblematic places, it is a few blocks up from the Orinoco Promenade.

Volviendo a la figura de El Libertador Simón Bolívar, en esta ciudad que se llamaba Angostura mientras él vivió, sucedieron muchas cosas que determinaron el destino de Venezuela. Mi tío me llevó al casco histórico para conocer algunos lugares emblemáticos, queda a unas cuadras subiendo desde el Paseo Orinoco.

We pass through streets with striking houses and arrive at Bolivar Square, around which there are several buildings, known as the Historic Quadrilateral.

Pasamos por calles con llamativas casas y llegamos a la Plaza Bolívar, a su alrededor hay varias edificaciones, lo que se conoce como el Cuadrilátero Histórico.

Although it is not very big, the Bolivar Square is beautiful, surrounding the statue of The Liberator there are five female figures that personify the countries he liberated.

Aunque no es muy grande, la Plaza Bolívar es preciosa, rodeando la estatua de El Libertador hay cinco figuras femeninas que personifican a los países que él liberó.

One of the historical sites we visited there was the Casa Prisión Piar, where General Manuel Piar, a hero of Venezuelan independence, was imprisoned before being shot. From the inner courtyard of the building I took this photo below of the statue of Bolivar in its plaza.

Uno de los sitios históricos que visitamos allí fue la Casa Prisión Piar, donde estuvo preso antes de ser fusilado el General Manuel Piar, prócer de la independencia de Venezuela. Desde el patio interior de la edificación hice esta foto que ven abajo de la estatua de Bolívar en su plaza.

You can also see from there the bell tower of the Cathedral of Santo Tomás, it was in one of its walls where General Piar was shot.

También se ve desde allí la torre del campanario de la Catedral de Santo Tomás, fue en una de sus paredes donde fue fusilado el General Piar.

We then walked a few meters to a famous place in Bolivarian history, the Casa de Angostura. Built between 1766 and 1777 to be a school, it served as a stage for Simón Bolívar to deliver his most important speech on February 15, 1819, known as the Angostura Speech, in which he analyzes the political scenario of the country, talks about education, the central power and expresses his opinion about the constitutional project, among other topics. When I entered the main hall of this house I found this pomposity, a baccarat crystal chandelier brought from France in 1840.

Después caminamos unos metros hacia un lugar célebre dentro de la historia bolivariana, la Casa de Angostura. Construida entre los años 1766 y 1777 para ser un colegio, sirvió como escenario para que Simón Bolívar pronunciara su discurso más importante el 15 de febrero de 1819, conocido como el Discurso de Angostura, en el que analiza el escenario político del país, habla sobre la educación, el poder central y expresa su opinión sobre el proyecto constitucional, entre otros temas. Cuando entré al salón principal de esta casa me encontré con esta pomposidad, una araña de cristal de bacará traída de Francia en 1840.

Today this building is a museum that preserves period furniture and historical works of art.

Actualmente esta edificación es un museo que conserva mobiliario de la época y obras de arte de corte histórico.

It has beautifully landscaped gardens, and check out one of the irrigation systems 😊.

Tiene unos jardines bellísimos, y vean uno de los sistemas de riego 😊.

In its spaces there are also usually exhibitions and other cultural activities. I had not seen balconies with this kind of shutters.

En sus espacios también se suelen hacer exposiciones y otras actividades culturales. No había visto unos balcones con esta especie de persianas.

From the second level of the Casa de Angostura you can have a view of the historic center of Ciudad Bolivar with the river in the background. Founded in 1764 with the name of Angostura, it was renamed in 1846 in honor of the Liberator.

Desde el segundo nivel de la Casa de Angostura se puede tener una vista del casco histórico de Ciudad Bolívar con el río de fondo. Fundada en 1764 con el nombre de Angostura, fue rebautizada en 1846 en honor al Libertador.

As we continued our walk I came across this sign and I couldn't help but take a picture of it, I thought it was nice that there is a street called "Amor Patrio" (Patriotic Love).

Al continuar nuestro paseo me topé con este letrero y no pude evitar fotografiarlo, me pareció bonito que exista una calle llamada "Amor Patrio".

Then we left the historic center to visit the Casa San Isidro, a hacienda that is now a museum, where Simon Bolivar used to stay when he was in these lands, it was here where he wrote the Angostura Speech.

Luego nos fuimos del casco histórico para ir a visitar la Casa San Isidro, una hacienda que ahora es un museo, en la que Simón Bolívar solía hospedarse cuando estaba por estas tierras, fue aquí donde escribió el Discurso de Angostura.

It is a very large place, with the typical colonial style house and large gardens that include a stream and many trees.

Es un lugar muy grande, con la típica casa de estilo colonial y amplios jardines que incluyen un riachuelo y muchos árboles.

In Venezuela Bolivar is a figure present since we began to study in school, sometimes they speak to us superficially of his historical feat and perhaps in that primary stage we don't understand much the dimension of everything he did, but as we grow up and go reading and understanding what he achieved in his short life to emancipate his country and other peoples of America, only one feeling emerges: admiration. For many, his ideas are still are still on track and taking root...

En Venezuela Bolívar es una figura presente desde que comenzamos a estudiar en la escuela, nos hablan a veces superficialmente de su gesta histórica y quizás en esa etapa primaria no entendemos mucho la dimensión de todo lo que hizo, pero al crecer e ir leyendo y comprendiendo lo que logró en su corta vida para emancipar su país y otros pueblos de América, sólo brota un sentimiento: la admiración. Para muchos sus ideas siguen en marcha y echando raíces...
