Parks are public spaces for gathering and rest, corners to take a pause from everyday life. In many of them there are monuments that not only beautify the surroundings, but also lead us to reflect on the values of the figures to whom homage is paid. Thus, what seems like a simple walk also becomes a contemplation of the culture and the history of a country.
Each statue, each bust, each commemorative plaque is a reminder of characters and moments that traced the artistic, social, or political course of a nation, keeping alive in a symbolic way the legacy and the collective identity.
In Cuba on December 22 the Day of the Educator is celebrated, and that is why I wanted to make my publication about this park that I found on one of my walks through Havana, and in which I had never stopped. It is the José de La Luz y Caballero Park and it is dedicated to one of the most illustrious pedagogues of my country, who lived in the 19th century, who is known as the "Father of Cuban Education."
In addition to showing you this beautiful place I have also wanted to do it as a tribute to Cuban teachers. José de la Luz y Caballero is currently remembered for his teachings and for the values of independence and ethics that he instilled in the Cuban youth with whom he interacted in his time.
The park is located very close to Avenida del Puerto, in Old Havana. It is a rather large place, surrounded by vegetation and by the oldest and most historic buildings of the city, which gives it an air of nostalgia and evocation of other times.
In its center there is a great sculpture of the master, from where one can see the building of the old Seminary of San Carlos, where he studied to become a professor. The place is very pleasant, full of large trees that always cast their fresh shade. In front extends the view of the blue sea and at the other end, the old city that always shows us the charm of its colonial architecture.
The sculpture is surrounded by a beautiful garden and rises upon a high granite pedestal, where we can see the bronze figure of this great personality, who is seated calmly with crossed feet, in a thoughtful attitude, looking at the city that passes before him. At his feet there is a plaque with his name and two phrases that identify him. All around is calm and peaceful, as if time stopped to accompany the memory of one who dedicated his life to teaching.
The José de la Luz y Caballero Park is at the same time the reminder that education is the root of the freedom of a people. Walking along its paths and standing before this grand monument one feels that the teachings of the master were not in vain. It is a place that safeguards the history and culture of the city.

Los parques son espacios públicos de encuentro y descanso, rincones para hacer una pausa de la vida cotidiana. En muchos de ellos se encuentran monumentos que no solo embellecen los alrededores, sino que también nos llevan a reflexionar sobre los valores de las figuras a las que se les rinde homenaje. Así lo que parece un simple paseo se convierte además en una contemplación de la cultural y la historia de un país.
Cada estatua, cada busto, cada placa conmemorativa es un recordatorio de personajes y momentos que trazaron el rumbo artístico, social o político de una nación, manteniendo vivo de una manera simbólica, el legado y la identidad colectiva.
En Cuba el 22 de diciembre se celebra el Día del Educador, y es por eso que quise hacer mi publicación sobre este parque que encontré en uno de mis paseos por La Habana, y en el que nunca me había detenido. Es el parque José de La Luz y Caballero y está dedicado a uno de los pedagogos más ilustres de mi país, que vivió en el siglo XIX, el cuál es conocido como el "Padre de la Educación Cubana".
Además de mostrarles este bello lugar he querido hacerlo también a modo de homenaje a los maestros cubanos. José de la Luz y Caballero es recordado actualmente por sus enseñanzas y por los valores de independencia y ética que inculcó en la juventud cubana con la que se relacionó en su tiempo.
El parque se encuentra muy cercano a la Avenida del Puerto, en La Habana Vieja. Es un lugar bastante amplio, rodeado de vegetación y de las edificaciones más antiguas e históricas de la ciudad, lo que le da un aire de nostalgia y de evocación por otras épocas.
En su centro hay una gran escultura del maestro, desde donde se puede ver el edificio del antiguo Seminario de San Carlos, donde estudió para convertirse en profesor. El lugar es muy agradable, lleno de grandes árboles que proyectan siempre su fresca sombra. Al frente la se extiende la visión del mar azul y en el otro extremo, la antigua ciudad que nos muestra siempre el encanto de su arquitectura colonial.
La escultura está rodeada de un bonito jardín y se levanta sobre un alto pedestal de granito, donde podemos ver la figura en bronce de esta gran personalidad, la que está sentada tranquilamente con los pies cruzados, en actitud pensativa, mirando la ciudad que pasa frente a él. Bajo sus pies hay una tarja con su nombre y dos frases que lo identifican. Todo alrededor es tranquilo y apacible, como si el tiempo se detuviera para acompañar la memoria de quien dedicó su vida a enseñar.
El parque José de la Luz y Caballero es a la vez el recordatorio de que la educación es la raíz de la libertad de un pueblo. Al recorrer sus senderos y pararnos frente a este grandioso monumento uno siente que las enseñanzas del maestro no fueron en vano. Es un lugar que resguarda la historia y la cultura de la ciudad.
