In Old Havana there exist, par excellence, four great squares that have stood out for their antiquity and history, which at present are icons of the city and known by almost all the inhabitants and even by foreign visitors who come from distant regions to get to know the colonial area of Old Havana, and from which many of the tourist tours begin for being surrounded by the oldest and busiest avenues of the colonial part.
Even so, these are not the only squares that exist and that keep fragments of history and centuries of daily life. In this publication I come to show you one of them known as The Plaza del Cristo. This public space is located a little farther away from the most famous areas that make up the historic center and although it is not one of the most mentioned squares, this makes it one of those places where one can see and feel how the daily life of Havana unfolds, without being impregnated with the tourist postcard atmosphere that is usually perceived in the places most visited by tourists.
It is located between Villegas, Teniente Rey, and Bernaza streets, from which one can have access to the place. It is also known as the Bernaza Park for being one of the points where two of the routes of a taxi line, known in Cuba as ‘Gacelas’, begin and end. For this reason, it is always a lively site, surrounded by many people who pass by or wait for transportation.
The square is also known for the church that is found on one of its sides and that bears the same name, Church of the Holy Christ of the Good Voyage, a simple building with a wide façade and modest exterior architecture, with a peculiar name. The history of its name is due to the fact that sailors would go there before starting their journeys to pray and ask Christ for protection, or after them to pay homage and give thanks for divine help when their voyages were satisfactory.
Also more recently many Cubans attend it, who begin their migratory journeys towards other countries; also some years ago did thousands of the so called Cuban “rafters” who departed illegally on a reckless and risky journey across the ocean in search of reaching United States lands.
In the center of this square, besides the trees that surround it and the simple wooden benches in the shade, there is a primary school, it is an old building that in another time was a religious school. In front of it rises a monument that honors one of the Cuban poets of the 19th century, symbol of cultural independence in the colonized Cuba of that time. His nickname was Plácido, and he was author of beautiful works about love, freedom, and justice.
This Park together with its church have been restored by the Office of the Historian of Havana, and in its surroundings, as in almost all the old squares of the city, there are several dwellings that define the architecture of the old colonial mansions.
The Plaza del Cristo is a space that, without having the fame of the great squares of Old Havana, also keeps a part of the memory of the history of the city. A pleasant place where the city breathes with naturalness and authenticity.

En la Habana Vieja existen por excelencia cuatro grandes plazas que se han destacado por su antigüedad e historia, las que en la actualidad son iconos de la ciudad y conocidas por casi todos los habitantes e incluso por los visitantes extranjeros que vienen desde regiones distantes a conocer la zona colonia de la Habana Vieja, y desde las que inician muchos de los recorridos turísticos por estar rodeadas de las avenidas más antiguas y concurridas de la parte colonial.
Aun así estas no son las únicas plazas que existen y que guardan fragmentos de historia y de siglos de vida cotidiana. En esta publicación vengo a mostrarle una de ellas conocida como La Plaza del Cristo. Este espacio público se encuentra un poco más alejado de las zonas más famosas que conforman el casco histórico y aunque no es de las plazas más mencionadas, esto la convierte en uno de esos sitios donde se puede ver y sentir como transcurre la vida cotidiana de La Habana, sin que esté impregnada del ambiente de postal turística que suele percibirse en los lugares más visitados por los turistas.
Se encuentra ubicada entre las calles Villegas, Teniente Rey y Bernaza, desde las cuales se puede tener acceso al lugar. También es conocida como el
Parque de Bernaza por ser este uno de los puntos donde comienza y concluyen dos de los recorridos de una ruta de taxi, conocidos en Cuba como Gacelas. Por ello siempre es un sitio animado, rodeado de muchas personas que transitan o esperan transporte.
La plaza es también conocida por la iglesia que se encuentra en uno de sus costados y que lleva igual nombre, Iglesia del Santo Cristo del Buen Viaje, una sencilla edificación de amplia fachada y modesta arquitectura exterior, con un nombre peculiar. La historia de su nombre se debe a que a ella acudían los marineros antes de iniciar sus viajes para rezar y pedir a Cristo protección, o después de ellos para rendir homenaje y agradecer la ayuda divina cuando sus travesías eran satisfactorias.
También más recientemente a ella asisten muchos cubanos, que inician sus viajes migratorios hacia otros países, también lo hicieron algunos años atrás miles de los llamados "balseros" cubanos que partían de manera ilegales en un temerario y riesgoso viaje por el océano en busca de llagar a tierras estadounidense.
En el centro de esta plaza además de los árboles que la rodean y los simples bancos de madera a la sombra se encuentra una escuela de enseñanza primaria, es una antigua edificación que fuera en otro tiempo un colegio religioso. Frente a ella se levanta un monumento que honra a uno de los poetas cubanos del siglo XIX, símbolo de la independencia cultural en la Cuba colonizada de aquella época. Su sobrenombre era Plácido, y fue autor de bellas obras sobre el amor, la libertad y la justicia.
Este Parque junto a su iglesia han sido restaurados por la Oficina del Historiador de la Habana, y en sus alrededores como en casi todas las plazas antiguas de la ciudad se hayan varias viviendas que definen la arquitectura de las antiguas casonas coloniales.
La Plaza del Cristo es un espacio que, sin tener la fama de las grandes plazas de la Habana Vieja, guarda también una parte la memoria de la historia de la ciudad. Un agradable lugar donde la ciudad respira con naturalidad y autenticidad.
