There are days when I like to take longer walks than I usually do when I go out around the neighborhood to do the weekly shopping. Sometimes I like to change the route and go through different places, that way I change the view, get a little more exercise, and always discover something new: a store, a café, or some point of sale. In that sense the city is always changing, and new establishments for the sale of goods or food are constantly opening. This time I did not go so far, since I was walking, so I headed to the nearest town, Arroyo Arenas.
The name of this place is due to the fact that in its beginnings there was in the area a sandy stream around which the town began to rise, thus its name remained immortalized. It is a simple neighborhood basically made up of houses, unlike where I live, where buildings predominate.
Almost all urban life is concentrated around the main street, Avenue 51, and along this avenue I carried out most of my walk. The most significant feature of Arroyo Arenas is its church, which can be seen from different points in the distance since it is built on the highest part of the place. From there one also obtains a privileged view of the avenue in all its extension.
Another feature that distinguishes the place is the bridge that passes over the river that crosses the town. It is not clear to me if this watercourse is the same one that gave the place its name, but here passes a part of the Quibú River, which runs through several municipalities of the capital before flowing into the sea. In other times it must have been a very beautiful landscape with crystalline waters crossing the abundant vegetation. Unfortunately urbanization has not contributed to keeping its waters clean and abundant, and today they are very polluted. Even so, leafy vegetation is still preserved in its surroundings and in the area that passes under the bridge, where I took the opportunity to take some photos.
I walked a little more after crossing the bridge, which really is not very extensive and over which vehicles transit and which only has a narrow sidewalk for pedestrians. On the way I took advantage to do some shopping and discovered new establishments. Then I turned around and made the way back along the same route, but in the opposite direction. When passing again over the bridge I took other photos, although the landscape was very similar on both sides. Here I could see that there are some houses very close to the river; personally I would not like to live so near a stream, but sometimes there is no other option.
I made my way back and fulfilled the objective of exercising and at the same time discovering a little more of the history and daily life of the surroundings of where I live. I always find something interesting in the surroundings and landscapes of each walk.

Hay días en que me gusta dar recorridos más largos de los que usualmente hago cuando salgo por el vecindario a hacer las compras de la semana. A veces me gusta cambiar el trayecto y pasar por lugares diferentes, así cambio la vista, hago un poco más de ejercicio y siempre descubro algo nuevo: una tienda, una cafetería o algún punto de venta. En ese sentido la ciudad está siempre cambiando y constantemente se abren nuevos locales para la venta de artículos o comestibles. Esta vez no fui tan lejos, ya que estaba caminando asi que me dirigí al poblado más cercano, Arroyo Arenas.
El nombre de este lugar se debe a que en sus inicios existía en la zona un arroyo arenoso alrededor del cual comenzó a levantarse el pueblo, quedando así inmortalizado su nombre. Es un reparto sencillo básicamente compuesto por casas, a diferencia de donde vivo yo, donde predominan los edificios.
Casi toda la vida urbana se concentra alrededor de la calle principal, la Avenida 51, y por esta avenida realicé la mayor parte de mi recorrido. Lo más significativo que tiene Arroyo Arenas es su iglesia, la que se puede ver desde distintos puntos en la distancia pues está construida en la parte más alta del lugar. Desde allí se obtiene también una vista privilegiada de la avenida en toda su extensión.
Otro rasgo que distingue el lugar es el puente que pasa sobre el río que atraviesa el poblado. No me queda claro si este curso de agua es el mismo que dió nombre al lugar, pero por aquí pasa una parte del río Quibú, que recorre varios municipios de la capital antes de desembocar en el mar. En otros tiempos debió de ser un paisaje muy hermoso con las aguas cristalinas atravesando la abundante vegetación. Por desgracia la urbanización no ha contribuido a mantener sus aguas limpias y abundantes, y hoy se encuentran muy contaminadas. Aun así todavía se conserva una vegetación frondosa en sus alrededores y en la zona que pasa bajo el puente del donde aproveché para tomar algunas fotos.
Caminé un poco más después de cruzar el puente que realmente no es muy extenso y sobre el cual transitan los vehículos y que solo tiene una estrecha acera para los peatones. En el trayecto aproveché para hacer algunas compras y descubrí nuevos establecimientos. Luego di media vuelta e hice el camino de regreso por la misma ruta, pero en sentido contrario. Al pasar nuevamente sobre el puente hice otras fotos, aunque el paisaje era muy similar en ambos lados. Aquí pude ver que hay algunas casas muy próximas al río, en lo personal no me gustaría vivir tan cerca de un cauce, pero a veces no se tiene otra opción.
Hice mi camino de regreso y cumplí con el objetivo de ejercitarme y al mismo tiempo descubrir un poco más de la historia y la vida cotidiana de los alrededores de donde vivo. Siempre encuentro algo interesante en los alrededores y paisajes de cada recorrido.
