In Cuba, the first houses were built behind the walls that protected the city. At a time when pirate attacks were common, it was necessary to be as sheltered as possible. These houses were built close together, as if they were joined for greater protection, around a square where the life and commerce of the city took place. In Old Havana, there are four squares, each with a different purpose. One of them is The Old Square, and it is the one I am going to talk about in my publication, along with the architecture that surrounds it.

I think I am fortunate to have in my country all these well-kept and preserved places where I can learn about so many things of historical and cultural interest. In Havana, the historian's office has dedicated time and effort in restoring the historic area of the city and maintaining its colonial architecture as it was in other times.

For a time, this square was known as Plaza Nueva, but over the years another square was built in a different area and then the people of Havana began to call it La Plaza Vieja, a name it maintains to this day.

This ample space was surrounded only by houses and stores, and by observing the place, we can know how the houses were designed some centuries ago, since this square continued to grow, and over time more elegant and better quality houses were built. Visiting The Old Square is like being in a great open-air museum.

Cuba is a tropical country, with a very hot climate and the houses were built with the purpose of counteracting the hot weather, so we can see many portals under roofs that allowed people to walk and shelter from the sun under its shade and large windows and balconies to let the breeze in. In all the buildings surrounding the square, we can see this type of design.

In this square only the passage of people is allowed in order to preserve the cobblestone of its streets. The whole place is very colorful, in the buildings stand out their balconies that protrude from the apartments, the high windows with beautiful stained glass, and the sequence of semicircular arches with its beautiful harmony.

In the centre of the square, there is a white marble fountain that replaces the old fountain that used to be there. Above the fountain and on the ground, there are always a lot of pigeons, seeing these birds flying around always gives me a sense of peace and tranquillity. There is also a unique sculpture that adorns the place, simulating a tree or a plant growing in the middle of the cobblestones of the square.

The Plaza Vieja is a World Heritage Site, so it is an area much visited by tourists. I remember some years ago I was walking around this place, although I remembered it differently. In my memory, the square was much livelier, with more people around. On one corner there was an open-air café where I remember drinking the best malt with milk I have ever tasted. This time it seemed a bit deserted, although maybe it was because it was a weekday.

This square is one of the most popular in Havana, a place that should be visited by everyone who wants to see the wonders of my city.

That's all, I hope you enjoyed getting to know this old colonial square.

Cheers, until next time!

I also like it very much because it is very wide and colorful. It is a beautiful sample of the architecture of other times in Cuba.
