Ratskellers in Germany are some of the best places to get a hearty winter feed coupled with the beer that is generally brewed on premises. It is a bit debatable whether the beer or the food is the biggest pull factor... however, there is no doubt that the beer and the food always are a great coupling!

However, if you do try this sort of place, then you will want be prepared for eating a huge hunk of meat of some sort... generally pork!

The Space

Der Andescher im Ratskeller is situated on a corner of a large building, with the entrance leading immediately downwards into the keller. It can be easy to miss the entrance if you don't know what you are looking for...

High arches and spacious interior makes for a nice and welcoming place to eat. When we visited it was after a concert, and so it was quite late in the evening and the place was almost closing up. We were the last patrons that were allowed in.

The hard surfaces and wooden furniture would mean that it would likely be quite loud when the place was filled... but in the sort of comforting sort of way. One additional bonus of these places is the warmth as thekitchen also heats up the whole space, and the underground nature of the restuarant means that it keeps the heat pretty well! Perfect for those winter evenings!

The Menu

The menu is pretty standard brewery German fare... large cuts of pork and various interesting Christmas time goodies. Most of the plates are meat based... and they are going to be HUGE servings!

However, there are a couple of vegetarian options and some of the delicious German variants on pizza, the Flammkuchen.

Most of the meals are pretty heavy though.... good for a night out with drinks, especially in winter... but not something you probably want to be eating everyday!

The Food

I would normally get the Schweinhaxe... and when they did arrive for other people in the party, they looked pretty damn good!

However, I was interested in the German traditional Christmas dish, the Knusprige Gansekeule (Roast Goose) which was served with red cabbage with apple and a giant potato Knodel. I don't often eat goose, but I am a giant fan of duck... so, I was thinking that I would really enjoy this! Plus, I LOVE potato Knodel!

Anyway, when it did arrive... I was pleasantly surprised. The meat was soft and just melted off the bones, and the sauce (and cabbage/apple) was a perfect accompaniament. In the end, it was also a great choice compared to the Schweinhaxe, as those ended up being gigantic!... so, I ended up eating well without feeling bloated... something that is pretty important when you are on tour!

The Experience

The beer here was pretty decent and the food was good as well. The goose was quite an interesting discovery, and I would be keen to try out different versions of it in the future!

The staff were friendly especially as we only just got in as they were closing the kitchen... and so they had to stay open a little bit longer whilst we put in our orders!

The actualy place was nice and warm to eat in, and with more diners (during busier times) it would have a really good community-like atmosphere.

I would definitely recommend this Ratskeller when you are in the area.
