When you have a short hour between a rehearsal and a concert... and it is bitterly cold, and you are just aching for a warm soothing rice dish, well, the options are pretty limited. Asian food tends to be quick and comforting (assuming that you dont land in a place that is too greasy...), and Vietnamese food in particular can be quite good as it has some interesting influences from French cuisine mixed with an Asian basis.
Luckily for us on this particular evening... we had found a decent Vietnamese place just around the corner from the concert hall... if we bolted immediately after the rehearsal, we should be back in time with just enough time to get dressed in concert tails and dresses before walking onto stage!
The Space
The actual restuarant can be easy to miss if you aren't looking for it. Situated on a parallel side street to the main ring road, it isn't the sort of place that you would just stumble upon if you didn't already know the area. Most tourists and visitors would just be walking along the main ring, and getting caught up in the much brighter and glitzier looking places that have their shop fronts facing that main thouroughfare.
However, once you are inside... it is a different world. In fact, one could even venture that it is quite trendy and modern looking... There is ample space, and the lighting, whilst modern, is not garish. There are high tables for diners as well as the regular table seating... Despite the relatively early hour, we were seated at the high tables, as the place was starting to get quite packed... so, even though it wasn't on the main road... it appears that this place does have a local name for itself!
A very nicely outfitted bar is also part of the restaurant if that is the sort of thing that you are dropping by for... however, not for us this evening... after all, nighttime is the time for us to work!
The Menu
No real surprises in the menu... all very much Vietnamese typical dishes. It was really quite nicely presented though... with more than enough photos for the people who aren't so well versed in German!
The Food
Despite the fact that everything on the menu looked pretty great... I did end up settling on the crispy fried duck (with steamed rice...). Everyone who has read a @tasteem review from my blog will know already that I'm quite partial to duck and lamb... so, it isn't any surprise there!
The duck was really nicely cooked, very crispy and the sauce was a great accompaniament. Special mention to the presentation of the dish... there is only so much that you can do with the meat part of it... but the vegetables and fruit were laid out in a way that really made the dish look it's best! Plus, it was edible as well.... so a bonus for vegetables!
The Experience
This is a great place to drop by if you are in the area... the food was great, the staff were really nice and fit us in despite the fact that the placew as already quite busy... and they were receptive to the fact that we were in a hurry and that we would need ot order and eat quickly so that we could make the concert.
All in all, definitely a place to remember if I'm in the area again! It's weird to find such a good place serving up Asian (Vietnamese) cuisine in the heart of Europe... but such are the benefits of global migration!
