Alluvial gold was first discovered in the area in the early 1850’s. However, the huge influx of prospectors depleted surface finds. To capitalize on the region’s mineral wealth, mines were quickly developed to access underground gold veins.

The name comes from the fact that it's a little off the beaten path and you can often find yourself here by yourself, so it was also nice to turn up and pretty much have the whole coast line free of anyone but us.
