Calderas, Barinas State, Venezuela
On our third and last day of excursions in Calderas and its surroundings, the itinerary we had would take us to Altamira de Cáceres, a nearby town where apart from walking its streets we were going to go to the Silencio Waterfalls, one of the most famous natural places in the area. The bus that had been hired arrived and we left for there at about 10:00 in the morning.
En nuestro tercer y último día de excursiones por Calderas y sus alrededores, el itinerario que teníamos nos llevaría a Altamira de Cáceres, un pueblo cercano donde aparte de caminar sus calles íbamos a ir a las Cataratas del Silencio, uno de los lugares naturales más famosos de la zona. Llegó el autobús que se había contratado y salimos para allá como a las 10:00 de la mañana.
When we were about ten minutes into the trip, the bus started to have problems. The driver stopped to see what was going on, tried to solve it but couldn't, so we had to get off and the plan to visit Altamira de Cáceres and the waterfalls was discarded since there was no other transportation available to take us.
Cuando teníamos como diez minutos rodando, el autobús comenzó a presentar problemas. El conductor se detuvo a ver qué pasaba, trató de resolver pero no pudo, así que nos tuvimos que bajar y el plan de conocer Altamira de Cáceres y las cataratas quedó descartado ya que no había otro transporte disponible que nos llevara.
Disappointed, we had to walk back to the village of Calderas, I think it took us about half an hour, but the scenery is so beautiful there that we forgot about the setback and planned what we would do after noon.
Decepcionados, tuvimos que volver caminando al pueblo de Calderas, creo que nos tomó como media hora, pero el paisaje es tan hermoso por allí que fuimos olvidando el contratiempo y planeamos lo que haríamos después del mediodía.
On the road we find the river on one side and then an iron bridge that visually clashes a bit with the vegetation.
En la carretera nos encontramos con el río a un lado y luego con un puente de hierro que visualmente desentona un poco con la vegetación.
We arrived at the town of Calderas and at about 1:00 pm we started the hike to the Pine Forest, the last place we visited during the three-day trip through this area of Barinas state.
Llegamos al pueblo de Calderas y cerca de la 1:00 de la tarde comenzamos la caminata hacia el Bosque de Pinos, el último lugar que visitamos durante el viaje de tres días por esta zona del estado Barinas.
Fortunately the weather was cool, the clouds protected us from the direct sun. The route from the village to there is about 3 km and all around is a beauty.
Afortunadamente el clima estaba fresco, las nubes nos protegieron del sol directo. La ruta desde el pueblo hacia allá es de unos 3 Km y todo alrededor es una belleza.
At a certain point the ascent begins and you have to make some effort, but it is not that long, soon you reach a flat part.
En cierto punto comienza el ascenso y hay que esforzarse un poco, pero no es tan largo, pronto se llega a una parte plana.
Here there are several small houses, many people live in this tranquility, planting different crops. Of course coffee, the star product of this area, is not lacking.
Por aquí hay varias casitas, muchas personas viven entre esta tranquilidad, sembrando diferentes rubros. Por supuesto que el café, producto estrella de esta zona, no falta.
A few minutes after passing the houses, we could finally see the Pine Forest.
Unos minutos después de pasar las casas, finalmente pudimos ver el Bosque de Pinos.
When you start to cross it, the characteristic smell of these trees fills the whole environment. Definitely its presence, that imposing height, creates a magical atmosphere, you feel like you are in a fable.
Cuando empiezas a atravesarlo, el olor característico de estos árboles inunda todo el ambiente. Definitivamente su presencia, esa imponente altura, crea una atmósfera mágica, te sientes como metida en una fábula.
I love the natural carpet that forms on the ground here, a product of the falling needles, which are the leaves that fall from the pine trees.
Me encanta la alfombra natural que se forma en el suelo de aquí, producto de la caída de las acículas, que son las hojas que caen de los pinos.
This pine forest is not well known in Venezuela, as for example is the one in Macarao National Park, in Miranda State, which is not natural but was planted a little over 40 years ago.
Este bosque de pinos no es muy conocido en Venezuela, como por ejemplo sí lo es el que está en el Parque Nacional Macarao del estado Miranda, el cual no es natural sino que fue sembrado hace poco más de 40 años.
I didn't obtain more information about it, that is to say, I didn't know if this Pine Forest in Calderas is natural or if it was also planted by someone for some purpose, neither I found what is the surface that it covers nor what species of pines are these, are they from the northern or southern hemisphere? I will have to investigate another time...
No obtuve mayor información sobre él, es decir, no supe si este Bosque de Pinos en Calderas es natural o también fue sembrado por alguien para algún fin, tampoco encontré cuál es la superficie que abarca ni qué especie de pinos son estos ¿serán del hemisferio norte o sur? Tendré que investigar en otra ocasión…
We continued our hike and arrived at a place that is like a lookout, from where you can see the whole town and its surroundings, and there we sat for a while to contemplate, rest and eat.
Continuamos nuestra caminata y llegamos a un sitio que es como un mirador, desde donde se puede observar todo el pueblo y sus alrededores, y ahí nos sentamos un rato a contemplar, descansar y comer.
After that break the tour continued to go to the Río Azul (Blue River), on a downhill trail about 3 km from where we were.
Luego de esa pausa el paseo siguió para ir hasta el Río Azul, por un sendero en bajada a unos 3 Km de donde estábamos.
Here we also find some houses in the forest.
Por aquí también nos encontramos con algunas casas entre el bosque.
The vegetation became thicker as we approached the river, water could be heard in the distance.
La vegetación se volvió más espesa a medida que nos acercábamos al río, el agua se escuchaba en la distancia.
Whoever wanted to could take a bath, we were going to stay there for a while, but since the water was freezing, I preferred to just take off my shoes and wet my feet.
El que quería podía bañarse, íbamos a estar un rato, pero como el agua estaba helada yo preferí sólo quitarme los zapatos y mojarme los pies.
There is a waterfall around here, which although small is very beautiful, they call it Timoteo Waterfall.
Hay una cascada por aquí, que aunque pequeña es muy linda, la llaman Cascada Timoteo.
At about 3:30 in the afternoon we started our way back to the town of Calderas, on the way I found some more scenes of the daily life of the villagers.
Como a las 3:30 de la tarde emprendimos el camino de regreso al pueblo de Calderas, en la ruta encontré algunas escenas más de la cotidianidad de los pobladores.
As in any town in Venezuela, the people here are very friendly and greeted us as we passed by. Although tourism has grown a bit in this part of Barinas state, it is still far from mass tourism and people are not so used to seeing visitors.
Como en cualquier pueblo de Venezuela, la gente de aquí es muy amable y nos saludaban al pasar. Aunque el turismo ha crecido un poco en esta parte del estado Barinas, aún está muy lejos del turismo masivo y las personas no están tan acostumbradas a ver visitantes.
