Capturing images of Puerto Colombia, Choroní - Venezuela [ENG-ESP]

In my three previous posts I shared mostly beach images of Choroní, but this town on the coast of Aragua State (Venezuela) is much more than that, its rich history is evident in any street you pass by, so this time I show you some pictures I captured in Puerto Colombia, and I start with the old but emblematic buses that take you there from Maracay.

En mis tres publicaciones anteriores compartí sobre todo imágenes playeras de Choroní, pero este pueblo de la costa del estado Aragua (Venezuela) es mucho más que eso, su rica historia se manifiesta en cualquier calle por la que pases, por eso en esta ocasión les muestro algunas estampas que capturé en Puerto Colombia, y comienzo con los viejos pero emblemáticos autobuses que te llevan hasta allá desde Maracay.

Founded in 1616 by Spanish settlers, in Choroní there was always wild cocoa, which the indigenous people collected both to use it as currency and to prepare a drink. With the rise of cocoa in Europe, the landowners used enslaved Indians and Africans and began to cultivate it to market it, thus this product became one of the most important in the economy of that time. In the streets of the town you can see many colonial style mansions, most of them nowadays converted into inns.

Fundado en 1616 por los colonos españoles, en Choroní siempre hubo cacao silvestre, el cual los indígenas recolectaban tanto para usarlo como moneda como para preparar una bebida. Con el auge del cacao en Europa, los hacendados utilizan a indios y africanos esclavizados y comienzan a cultivarlo para comercializarlo, así este producto se convirtió en unos de los más importantes de la economía de aquella época. En las calles del pueblo se pueden ver muchas casonas de estilo colonial, la mayoría convertidas hoy en posadas.

Along the main street of Puerto Colombia are the best known places, such as the church and the Bolivar Square, all around invites you to look.

Por la calle principal de Puerto Colombia están los lugares más conocidos, como la iglesia y la Plaza Bolívar, todo alrededor te invita a mirar.

Even the ruins are photogenic, fortunately I only saw one building in that state, in general the old architecture of the town is well preserved.

Incluso las ruinas son fotogénicas, afortunadamente sólo vi una edificación en ese estado, en general la arquitectura antigua del pueblo está bien conservada.

Something that I have been chasing for a long time and that I found a lot here are the attractive, enigmatic doors, I leave you some samples.

Algo que ando persiguiendo hace tiempo y que encontré mucho aquí son las puertas atractivas, enigmáticas, les dejo unas muestras.

Turning off the main street I found a beautiful mural, it is a work of Venezuelan artist Oscar Olivares, who works with waste material such as plastic caps for his creations, and thus transmits an ecological message to those who see them. This one with the turtle was finished in December 2022, he has made many throughout the country and the people of each place have participated in the elaboration of each one.

Desviándome de la calle principal me encontré con un bonito mural, se trata de una obra del artista venezolano Oscar Olivares, quien trabaja con material de desecho como lo son las tapas plásticas para sus creaciones, y así transmite un mensaje ecológico a los que las ven. Este con la tortuga fue terminado en diciembre de 2022, ha realizado muchos en todo el país y la gente de cada lugar ha participado en la elaboración de cada uno.

The color is something that characterizes the streets of Puerto Colombia, the one I saw the most was yellow, I think it looks great in this type of architecture.

El color es algo que caracteriza a las calles de Puerto Colombia, el que más vi fue el amarillo, me parece que luce muy bien en este tipo de arquitectura.

And if we talk about details, there are many as soon as you peek, for example, inside one of these colonial mansions.

Y si hablamos de detalles, hay muchísimos apenas te asomas, por ejemplo, al interior de una de estas casonas coloniales.

Towards the boardwalk is, let's say, the most modern part of Puerto Colombia, where most of the activity is concentrated (stores, restaurants, services) and although there is some disorder, it is still interesting to see what we can find there.

Hacia el malecón está, digamos, la parte más moderna de Puerto Colombia, aquí se concentra la mayor actividad (tiendas, restaurantes, servicios) y aunque hay algo de desorden, no deja de ser interesante todo lo que allí podemos encontrar.

The sea breeze blows through the streets as you reach the bridge over the river where the crossing to Playa Grande is located. The parking lot of the colorful boats is a postcard.

La brisa del mar se cuela por las calles mientras llegas al puente sobre el río donde está el cruce hacia Playa Grande. El estacionamiento de las coloridas lanchas es toda una postal.

Now let's go to the boardwalk, a strategic place, before because it was an important port for the exportation of cocoa and other products, and today because the main economic activities of Choroní take place here: fishing and tourism. Here, at one end, is the pier from where the fishermen leave for their work and the boatmen who take tourists to the different beaches of this coast.

Ahora vayamos al malecón, un lugar estratégico, antes porque era un importante puerto para la exportación del cacao y otros productos, y hoy porque aquí se desarrollan las principales actividades económicas de Choroní: pesca y turismo. Por aquí, en un extremo, está el embarcadero desde donde salen los pescadores a sus labores y los lancheros que llevan turistas a las diferentes playas de esta costa.

Many people gather here, especially at sunset to hang out, and it is also a commercial area for the artisans who work here on weekends and during the high season.

En este paseo se reúne mucha gente, sobre todo al atardecer para pasar el rato y también es un área comercial para los artesanos que trabajan acá los fines de semana y en temporadas altas.

There are several cannons that are exhibited along this promenade, they are original and were used since the eighteenth century to defend this place from pirate attacks.

Hay varios cañones que están exhibidos a lo largo de este paseo, son originales y fueron utilizados desde el siglo XVIII para defender este lugar del ataque de piratas.

There are several trees on the boardwalk and it is pleasant to sit at any time because there is shade. I noticed that there were construction materials piled up in one area, I'm sure they are about to renovate it, many of the structures look worn out.

En el malecón hay varios árboles y es agradable sentarse a cualquier hora porque hay sombra. Observé que había materiales de construcción apilados en un área, seguro están por renovarlo, muchas de sus estructuras lucen desgastadas.

This sign is recent, it is part of the policies of the Ministry of Tourism to identify the places in an attractive way for people to take pictures there, at night it has illumination of various colors.

Este letrero si es reciente, forma parte de las políticas del Ministerio del Turismo para identificar los lugares de una forma atractiva para que la gente se tome fotos allí, en la noche tiene iluminación de varios colores.

The statue of St. John the Baptist, patron saint of the town of Choroní, also stands out here. Every June 23rd the town celebrates this saint, it is one of its most important traditions and the celebration lasts for several days with processions, music, dance, food and other activities.

Resalta también aquí la estatua de San Juan Bautista, patrono del pueblo de Choroní. Cada 23 de junio el pueblo festeja a este santo, es una de sus tradiciones más importantes y la fiesta se extiende por varios días con procesiones, música, danza, comida y otras actividades.
