The Vatican itself is special in that it is the smallest country in the world. The Vatican is located in Rome. Yes, the Vatican is a state located in a city. There is no logic, but that's how it is. I've said it a million times from the beginning, but in case you don't know, the Vatican is the smallest country in the world :D, but it has enormous importance, not only because of its size, but also because of its cultural and religious significance. It is located in the heart of Rome, Italy, and covers just 44 hectares, which is roughly the size of 60 football fields. Although physically small, the Vatican is the center of the Catholic Church and the home of the Pope, the spiritual leader of more than a billion Catholics worldwide.

History

The Vatican is a place with a rich history. The establishment of this territory dates back to the 4th century, when Emperor Constantine built St. Peter's Basilica at the place where, according to tradition, the apostle Peter was buried. Over the centuries, the Papal State was a very influential political entity in Italy. However, after the unification of Italy in 1870, a large territory was taken away from the popes, until the Lateran Treaty was concluded between the Holy See and Italy in 1929, which made the Vatican an independent state.

Papacy

The Vatican is the seat of the Roman Catholic Church, and the Pope is its supreme spiritual leader, as well as the ruler of this small country. The Pope has a key role in global affairs, and currently it is Pope Francis, who came to the head of the church in 2013. It is interesting that the pope, although he is the leader of the religion, also manages the state at the same time, making the Vatican a unique political and religious entity.

Important places in the Vatican

The Vatican is home to some of the most famous sacred and cultural monuments:

  1. Saint Peter's Basilica is one of the largest and most beautiful churches in the world. It is famous for works of art such as Pietà by Michael Angelo, and from it you can see the magnificent square in front.

  2. The Sistine Chapel is perhaps best known for its frescoes by Michael Angelo, particularly the "Creation of Adam" on the ceiling. This chapel is also the place where the new pope is elected.

  3. The Vatican Museums hold a priceless collection of works of art, from Renaissance paintings to sculptures, including works by Raphael and Bernini.

  4. The Vatican Gardens are also a special attraction, with beautiful scenery and historical significance.

Population

Although the Vatican is only a few hectares large, about 800 people live in it, but only a small number are permanently inhabited. Most are church officials, military, employees, and many people come on temporary assignments. The inhabitants of the Vatican are mostly foreign nationals.

Economy

The Vatican does not have a traditional economy as it mainly relies on donations from the faithful, sales of museum tickets, souvenirs and similar activities. Given that the Vatican has no industry in the classical sense, it is financed through cultural resources and generous donations from around the world.

Policy and legislation

The Vatican is an absolute monarchy, which means that the Pope is both the political leader and the spiritual leader. He has complete control over all matters, and the state functions on the basis of canon law (church law). Although the Vatican is not a member of the United Nations, it has observer status and diplomatic relations with many countries.

The Vatican is a symbol of Christian faith and culture, although it is very small in terms of size, its influence is enormous. As the seat of the Catholic Church, it has a significant role in shaping global religious, cultural and moral values.
