Travel - Kruja

December 2019 · 3 min read

After a short rest on our beach in Goleme we go on a trip again. After all, there will be plenty of time to laze and now we want to get to know the local culture and history. As the destination of today's trip, we chose the old political center of Albania, the city of Kruja.

We use the travel agency offer again and set off. The road goes slowly, in such a heat does not travel twice pleasantly. The journey is made more pleasant by a guide who informs us about the history of Albania during the Ottoman rule.

We go on by bus when the microphone guide reports we're in Kruja. In her new part we can see a statue of George W Bush. During his visit to Albania he also visited this city and the locals built a statue in memory.

We ascend higher up the hills when a beautiful view of the first destination of our journey, the old Kruja, is shown in front of us. The town is built on the slopes of the Sari - Salltik mountains. The ruins of Kruja Castle form the dominant of the city and a symbol of resistance to the Ottoman Empire.

The castle was the seat of the Albanian national hero Gjergy Kastrioti, known as Skanderbeg, who united the then quarreling clans and led the uprising against the Ottomans.

We get off the bus and we walk on a stony pavement, lined with many stalls. Here we can buy a variety of goods, from handicrafts to traditional garments, gold, silver necklaces, bracelets, historical items and of course souvenirs.

Through the castle gate we entered the castle complex. It must be said that there was not much left of the castle. A few perimeter walls and several castle towers. However, the castle offers a breathtaking view of the surroundings.

The castle complex also includes a museum dedicated to the Albanian national hero. Here we learn everything about Skanderbeg and his fight. There are objects, documents, equipment ... from this period.

It is a pity that there is a ban on photography.

On the way from the castle, we of course stopped at the market.
Certainly we would look at the market more closely, just a pity that we did not have enough time and had to rush to the bus. We had yet another adventure...

Thank you
