Today’s journey was to Beppu. The goal was to eat at Jigoku Steaming Workshop located at the Kannawa Onsen area.

This is how the outside of the eatery looks like.

The style of food we ate is called Jigoki Mushi.

Jigoku Mushi is a unique culinary tradition rooted in Beppu's renowned hot springs, often referred to as Beppu's 'hells.' This traditional cooking method, dating back to the Edo period, involves placing vegetables and seafood in a steamer, where they are slowly and delicately cooked using the hot air generated by these natural geothermal wonders.

What sets Jigoku Mushi apart is its ability to retain the true flavors of the ingredients without losing them to water or oil, resulting in an exceptionally rich and nuanced taste experience. Additionally, this cooking technique is known for its health benefits, as it preserves the vitamins and nutrients of the food within the steam, in contrast to boiling or frying methods.

After paying and getting the food, we walked to the cooking place where the steamers are.

We put our food into steamers ourselves with the help of the waiting staff there.

Plenty of steam from the hot spring.

Of course it took time to cook and we went back to our seats with a running timer, and only returned to collect it when the time is up.

I must say the food is really yummy!
