The province of Krabi is one of the most popular ones in Thailand, because it's undoubtedly also one of the most beautiful ones. Krabi is known for its gorgeous island world, the white beaches and especially the limestone cliffs that you will find everywhere in the province. I'm always happy to be back in Krabi and do a tour to the beautiful offshore islands.

Koh Hong/Hong Island

A good starting point for such an island tour is the main tourist resort called Ao Nang. In Ao Nang there are countless hotels, restaurants, bars, tourist shops, etc. A typical tourist place that may be even too touristy for one or the other. Still, I have to say that I like Ao Nang very much and I always like to come back (in low season rather than in high season).

Koh Hong - still a paradise or too crowded?

There are several ways to get to Hong Island. On the one hand you can book an organized island hopping tour in the travel agencies of Ao Nang and Krabi Town.

But it also works when you go on your own, renting a whole long-tail boat. The price depends on the season and your negotiating skills, but should start at about 2500 baht (round trip). This is of course very expensive for a small group, but if you're traveling with 4 or more people, it's already worth it.

In contrast to the other islands off Krabi, e.g. Koh Poda, Koh Gai and Koh Tub, Hong Island is located a little further in the Andaman Sea. Here the trip by boat takes about an hour.

Before going to the actual beach of Koh Hong, the driver will take you first to the lagoon of the island (if the tides permit, because if the water is too low, you will not get in). This is very nice to see and depending on the water level, you can even swim there.

The island is amazing! There are several beaches, but the most beautiful part is surely the crescent-shaped bay, where you can swim with many colorful fish.

Unfortunately, Hong Island is actually (at least in the main season) crowded with tourists. If you have the opportunity, you should come early in the morning to avoid the tourists who come with the day trips. If you come in the off-season, it might even happen that you have this piece of paradise just for yourself.

Conclusion

For me it was a fantastic trip and even if I wished for less tourists, it was still acceptable. I would definitely come back because the island was not too busy, compared to other places in Thailand. It was a pity, however, that when we arrived, the low tide just came in and a few hours later, the water of the beautiful was much too shallow for swimming. Be sure to check the tides on your trip to Koh Hong!
