Verdon Gorge, France - Such Beauty Will Take Your Breath Away

A trip to Provence should definitely include a visit to the famous Verdon Gorge. I think, I’m even sure that you will have an unforgettable impression of what you saw.

We studied the route to the canyon in advance at various sites and in reviews.

To explore the Verdon Gorge, we could choose two routes: along the northern shore and along the southern side. The most beautiful route is the southern one. Along this road, there are picturesque shores, trees, mountains, but during the tourist season, the shores are covered with dense vegetation and exploring the gorge is difficult. It is recommended to choose the northern route in summer. There are also hiking routes to explore the 15 km long canyon. We chose the northern route. We left the hotel and, after about 15 minutes, crossed the Pont du Caletas Gordes du Verdon bridge.

The view from the bridge is very beautiful. On the right is the entrance to the Verdon Gorge, and on the left is Lake Sainte-Croix. Tourist boats, kayaks, canoes, and kayaks sail in large numbers into the Verdon Gorge. From above, it looks very nice. The color of the water in the lake and near the gorge is stunningly beautiful, emerald green.

Then we moved onto the D952 highway and after a few minutes we saw the beginning of the gorge from a high cliff. We stopped the car and started taking pictures enthusiastically. The cliff is very steep and dangerous. It takes your breath away when you look down. But how beautiful everything is.

Now a few words about the Verdon Gorge. The Verdon River flows from the Alpine foothills and for several millenia, it was carving a channel in the canyon. The width of the canyon in some places is 1500 meters and the depth is up to 700 meters. The Verdon River forms 5 artificial lakes. One of them, as I already mentioned, is Sainte-Croix. Verdon is translated from the word green. The Verdon Gorge is the deepest gorge in France. Thousands of nature and simply beautiful views lovers flock here.

The Verdon River originates in the mountains of Provence. Replenished with snow from the local mountains, it moves south towards the coast. Having made a turn to the west, the river flows into the Verdon Gorge, where it rapidly picks up speed and flows through the canyon. The banks have become almost vertical.

We drove further along the highway. The road runs almost next to the gorge, only sometimes moving away from the gorge. But the road itself is very picturesque, with steep cliffs overhanging the road and forming tunnels. Open spaces, mountains - a very beautiful landscape.

I really wanted to walk through hiking trails. But unfortunately, we had little free time, so we limited ourselves to slowly moving around the canyon and periodically getting out of the car.

Where there was an opportunity to leave the car, we left it and went out to admire the beauty. The air became fresher and more pleasant by evening.

I'll say right away that the parking spaces near most viewing platforms are designed for one, maximum of three cars. And, unfortunately, it may turn out that the car is already parked there, and you will not be able to stop.

In principle, we moved along the road quite freely. There were cars, but not many. Motorhomes disappeared from a certain point, everyone turned to camping. There are sections of the route where they simply cannot pass due to their size. But it doesn’t matter, their owners will be able to explore the area by riding a bicycle. 

Every time we see the gorge, we stop the car and admire the views. Reviews from tourists indicate that the observation deck is where we are aiming. While we were driving along the route to the observation deck, we missed a turn, a transition to another route. It was necessary to switch from the D952 highway to the D23 highway. But we drove further along the highway. So we got to the town of Castellan. This town is very popular among tourists. There are many hotels here and in the summer it is very lively.

By the way, many tourist routes along the Verdon Gorge start from Castellane. Tourists most often come there from Marseille. We stayed in the town for a few minutes and decided to return to the missed turn. Staying at the observation deck, you can feel the power, depth, and beauty of the Verdon Gorge, but you can also feel it from several points, even at the very beginning of the journey. 

We were already pretty tired from the road; the mountain serpentine road, although very beautiful, was quite exhausting for both the driver and passengers. And we arrived at Lake Saint-Croix. Having seen the sky-blue color of the water in the light of day, we simply could not help but stop there.

There were a lot of people, but I can’t say that the parking lot was packed to capacity. We found a shady place quite easily. After swimming in the lake and short relaxing on the shore, we continued our way.

Now we had to drive through the Verdon Gorge from the other side. The road is replete with constant sharp turns, so I advise people with weak vestibular apparatus to stock up on appropriate pills. Just in case. Periodically, we stop at observation platforms and admire not only the views, but also the lavender and vineyards. Sellers of lavender bouquets are often found here.

We drove a little more and stopped at another site with a view of the Verdon River and Lake Saint-Croix. Again, we get into the car and continue our journey, and again we can’t help but get out to enjoy the breathtaking views.

The gorge is located not far, within 100 km, from the Côte d'Azur, or rather from Nice and Cannes. When in Provence, you should definitely set aside a free day to see all this beauty with your own eyes. True, to get here, you need to have a car at your disposal. Organized excursions to the gorge are rare. Getting there by public transport is also problematic; there are only several buses a day. Therefore, the most convenient and optimal option is your own independent transport.

Moments like these make you realize that happiness still exists! Happiness to see with your own eyes all the power and beauty of nature. The feeling is really hard to describe. And we leave Verdon and go to see other places.

Važiavome toliau greitkeliu. Kelias driekiasi beveik šalia tarpeklio, tik kartais nutolsta nuo jo. Tačiau pats kelias labai vaizdingas - stačios uolos, iškylančios virš kelio ir sudarančios tunelius. Atviros erdvės, kalnai - labai gražus kraštovaizdis.

Labai norėjau pasivaikščioti pėsčiųjų takais. Bet, deja, turėjome mažai laisvo laiko, todėl apsiribojome lėtu judėjimu aplink kanjoną ir periodišku išlipimu iš automobilio.

Ten, kur buvo galimybė palikti automobilį, palikome jį ir išėjome pasigrožėti grožiu. Vakarop oras tapo gaivesnis ir malonesnis.

Iš karto pasakysiu, kad automobilių stovėjimo vietos prie daugumos apžvalgos aikštelių skirtos vienam, daugiausia trims automobiliams. Ir, deja, gali paaiškėti, kad automobilis jau stovi toje vietoje, ir jūs negalėsite sustoti.

Važiuodami maršrutu iki apžvalgos aikštelės, praleidome posūkį, perėjimą į kitą maršrutą. Reikėjo persirikiuoti iš D952 greitkelio į D23 greitkelį. Tačiau mes važiavome toliau greitkeliu. Taip pasiekėme Kastelano miestelį. Šis miestelis labai populiarus tarp turistų. Čia yra daug viešbučių, o vasarą čia labai gyva.

Beje, daugelis turistinių maršrutų palei Verdono tarpeklį prasideda nuo Kastelano. Dažniausiai turistai čia atvyksta iš Marselio. Kelias minutes pabuvome miestelyje ir nusprendėme grįžti į praleistą posūkį. Žmonių buvo daug, tačiau negaliu pasakyti, kad automobilių stovėjimo aikštelė buvo prigrūsta žmonių. Gana lengvai radome pavėsingą vietą. Išsimaudę ežere ir trumpai pailsėję ant kranto, tęsėme kelionę.

Dabar turėjome važiuoti per Verdono tarpeklį iš kitos pusės. Kelyje gausu nuolatinių staigių posūkių, todėl žmonėms, turintiems silpną vestibiuliarinį aparatą, patariu apsirūpinti atitinkamomis tabletėmis. Visam atvejui. Periodiškai sustojame prie apžvalgos aikštelių ir grožimės ne tik vaizdais, bet ir levandomis bei vynuogynais. Čia dažnai galima sutikti levandų puokščių pardavėjų.

Važiavome dar šiek tiek ir sustojome kitoje aikštelėje, iš kurios atsiveria vaizdas į Verdono upę ir Sen Kroa ežerą. Vėl sėdame į automobilį ir tęsiame kelionę, ir vėl negalime neišlipti pasigrožėti kvapą gniaužiančiais vaizdais.

Šis tarpeklis yra netoli, per 100 km, nuo Žydrojo kranto, tiksliau, nuo Nicos ir Kanų. Būdami Provanse, būtinai turėtumėte skirti laisvą dieną, kad savo akimis pamatytumėte visą šį grožį. Tiesa, norint čia nuvykti, reikia turėti automobilį. Organizuotos ekskursijos į tarpeklį rengiamos retai. Viešuoju transportu nuvykti ten taip pat problemiška - per dieną kursuoja tik keli autobusai. Todėl patogiausias ir optimaliausias variantas - nuosavas savarankiškas transportas.
