Some places just defy any possible reasonable logic.

Or... let's say it seems so just after a few decades.

So how do leisure places names like "Dolphin", "Dolphin Marina" and "Artificial Beach" sound to you?

For sure, those sound nice, probably implying one will find a beautiful secluded and possibly romantic place to spend some time, few hours, maybe few days or a couple of weeks during their summer vacation, by the shores of Black Sea.

However, as you already suspect, the reality is completely different.

What I would call all that abomination is a true real life instance of the quote "The road to hell is paved with good intentions."

Nevertheless, now I will surprise you, despite all that brutalism this place still has some enjoyable sides.

But hey, what could those be?

DDH_2058.jpg

I am sure the whole resort had been planned as a big summer vacation destination.

DDH_2020.jpg

To tell you the truth, this time I didn't have any desire to search online more info about this "construction", if I may use this term about it at all.

DDH_2021.jpg

Getting there by a car is easy, plenty of free slots to park, very close to those abandoned hotels.

A rotunda with a view... it had been...

DDH_2022.jpg

So this abandoned sea resort is located at "Saint Constantin and Elena", that is presently a district of the so=called sea capital of Bulgaria, Varna.

DDH_2023.jpg

As such, there is even public bus transport so one could go there on foot, let's say fifteen-twenty minutes walk.

DDH_2024.jpg

The resort really looks surreal.

Very long and tall metallic fences, cutting access to the buildings.

What makes it all even more surreal, though, is the fact that to its left and right sides, there are luxurious sea resorts providing quite expensive accommodation.

DDH_2025.jpg

Letting a sea resort decay, here, near one of the biggest cities, really defies any logic.

The city has an airport, Romania is only an hour or so by a car, so the potential of this is really huge.

DDH_2026.jpg

Still, though, it has been let to fall completely into ruins.

DDH_2027.jpg

I can tell this was a really huge investment, that probably never got back any ROI.

DDH_2028.jpg

I bet it was someone very ambitious who wanted to leave something behind.

DDH_2029.jpg

What they left behind... apart from the obvious... is silence.

DDH_2030.jpg

That long few stories hotel was a kind of a wall that was stopping the noise of the sea and the noise of the city.

DDH_2031.jpg

I can't figure out what is the idea behind this huge wet dock.

DDH_2032.jpg

It wouldn't surprise me if back then the architect had planned some sea pools.

DDH_2033.jpg

Or maybe this whole dock had military purpose as well.

DDH_2034.jpg

Probably nobody is alive to tell or they would be too ashamed to share, given the devastation left behind this "promising" project...

DDH_2035.jpg

This place hold some artistic potential.

You see, despite the call to "Kill them ALL", it is still alive.

DDH_2036.jpg

I saw the traces of a few generations of graffiti artists and we know, the elements of nature are stronger by the sea so any art is destined to disappear sooner than inland.

DDH_2037.jpg

A lot of details to wonder.

... and to pay close attention, otherwise a visit for an anti-tetanus injection would be needed...

DDH_2038.jpg

Then I saw a few people having a picnic and I suddenly realized, that's a wonderful spot for this.

DDH_2039.jpg

Mainly because there will not be many other people who would do that here!

Walking around I found some scripting that is usually left by the construction workers.

DDH_2040.jpg

Two dates:

6 February 1992

and

14 January 1992

DDH_2041.jpg

Not an usual time of the year to lay concrete, especially in the sea.

I imagine, freezing winds, crushing waves and special compounds and additives for the concrete so it dries in the close-to-zero degree Celsius temperatures.

I guess the construction was in a hurry.

DDH_2042.jpg

I have an idea why this place is left to completely decay.

Given Bulgaria became a member of the EU in 1997, it then became much more difficult to build inside the sea, as there is European legislation that serves to preserve Nature.

DDH_2043.jpg

So, my wild guess - this place will look like this unless a huge international investor steps in.

DDH_2044.jpg

DDH_2045.jpg

Until then, this will obviously continue to be an arena for graffiti battles and competitions.

Trainings too, as it seems...

DDH_2046.jpg

Something that has not been erected. Thank God...

DDH_2047.jpg

DDH_2048.jpg

Probably slots for sailboats and yachts.

DDH_2049.jpg

And beautiful remains of sea fauna.

DDH_2050.jpg

Slippery adrenaline walks. One wrong step and then wet bottoms :)

DDH_2051.jpg

Now, the other good aspect of it, as barely anyone is visiting, the water was crystal clear! :)

DDH_2052.jpg

Now, more surrealism!

DDH_2053.jpg

Rust and algae...

DDH_2054.jpg

DDH_2055.jpg

DDH_2056.jpg

And obviously someone has been horny, if this could be defined as art. I guess, yes, it could be! :)

The positive side is this won't be here the next summer :)

DDH_2057.jpg

A couple of last looks from the sea...

DDH_2058.jpg

DDH_2059.jpg

Should I bring a blanket, food and a bottle of wine, when next time here? ;)
