Belgorod-Dniester is located just 540 kilometers from Kiev. It is 90 km from Odessa. Akkerman fortress rises above the city. It is considered one of the main attractions of modern Ukraine. It is one of the largest fortresses in Eastern Europe. Akkerman fortress itself was built in the Middle Ages. But the territory itself has a rich history that begins 2500 years ago. Now 57 thousand people live in the city.

Why can Akkerman fortress and Belgorod-Dniester be considered a medieval metropolis?

Tina Fedoseyeva, a historian and guide of the fortress, says that the walls themselves were built from a local white shell. This feature formed the basis of numerous names of the city and the fortress. All of them were associated with the White Stone.

Unfortunately, the documents that relate to the beginning of the construction of the fortress were almost not preserved.

Disputes about who laid the fortress are ongoing. Some believe that the citadel was built by the Genoese. There are supporters of the version that the Horde itself laid the fortress under the command of Khan Berke. There are those who believe that this is all the work of the freemasons.

If we analyze all the disputes, we can conclude that the fortress was built during the time of the Principality of Moldova. Apparently the fortress was built at the expense of the townspeople. In those distant, Middle Ages, she wore the status of “Port-Franco”. A transit point located at the intersection of several trade routes.

A branch of the Great Silk Road passed through this territory. That is, the so-called “Moldavian noble” passed. He connected Northwest Europe with Southern and Eastern countries.

As you know, trade brought decent income to the townspeople. Therefore, they were able to afford to build a strong, monumental fortification.

Researchers of Moldova claim that at that time more than 20 thousand people lived in the fortress and its environs. I note that this number of inhabitants allows us to call the city a metropolis (by the standards of the Middle Ages). At that time, the fortress was known under the name: Chetatya Alba.

Some statistics
