We continue to speak for Odessa. Today we will go beyond the remote corner of Odessa - Kuyalnik. In particular, we will tell you about 5 interesting facts that few people know about.

Why Kuyalnik?

There are 2 versions of the origin of the name. This area was called Kuyalnik because of the estuary and the sanatorium of the same name. Scientists believe that the name comes from the Turkic word “kyanlyk”. Translated: "thick." The estuary itself is a large source of salt. Due to its high concentration, it often turned into a dense substance.

According to the second version, the name has Slavic roots. In particular, it denotes a boat pier or a marina.

Let me remind you that in the 19th century the estuary was named after the doctor Erast Andreevsky. That is, the estuary was Andreevsky. This dohtor founded the resort here!

Not an estuary, but a bay of the Black Sea

In the old days, on the estuary site was the mouth of the Bolshoy Kuyalnik river. Gradually, the mouth began to turn into a bay. Around the 14th century, an estuary formed. In particular, deposits of sand and river stones formed a mound.

Sometimes the estuary turns red. This is due to the propagation of Dunaliella algae. In addition, there are a large number of halobacteria in the water.

There was a fish in the estuary !!!

Yes, now it's hard to believe! But in the estuary there really was a hump. Recall the Description of Ukraine, compiled by a 17th century French engineer and cartographer Guillaume Levasser de Boplan. He writes that not far from Odessa. In total no more than 200 steps. So he writes that people from all over Ukraine came here for fishing. Then there were carps and pikes of unprecedented magnitude.

Unfortunately, today there is no fish. Of living organisms, you can find only the gill-footed crustacean Artemia and the mosquito larva (all are called bloodworms).

We get salt

After the river separated from the sea (14th century) and an estuary was formed, the concentration of salt began to increase in the water. In this regard, in the Middle Ages, the estuary turned into a large salt industry. Cossacks and Chumaks gathered in Kuyalnitsky estuary. They traded kuyalnitskoy salt throughout Europe. Note that mining continued until 1931.

The lowest point of Ukraine

Odessa continues to break various records. This is the largest region of the country. We have the largest lake in the country. And, of course, the lowest point. In the estuary there is a place where minus 5 meters above sea level is noted.

Yes, our region attracts with a variety of interesting stories and legends. No wonder they consider the Odessa region unique and distinctive. We will continue to speak not only for the Kuyalnitsky estuary, but also for other places in the region. In addition, we will speak for the outstanding natives of our region. We will interview many people.
