Despite the fact that we do not post materials as often as we would like, we still continue to talk about our beloved homeland - the Odessa region. Today we will talk about Savrani. We are interested in the origin of the name Savran. That is, the history of the name of the most ancient settlement of Odessa region became interesting. But, in ancient times we will talk a little later.
The times of the Tatars and Turkish domination
Savran and the Golden Horde
The fact that Savran has Turkic roots is beyond doubt. But this does not allow us to give an exact answer to the question about the origin of this name. Let us turn to the work of Grekov and Yakubovsky "Golden Horde and its fall." In the work meets the name of a small town, which was located in Central Asia, on the banks of the river. Syrdarya - Saran. Accordingly, it can be assumed that the founders of the village borrowed this name.
One more version can be attributed to this era. In the Turkish-Russian dictionary there is an interesting word: "savra". It translates as singing. But for the version of the involvement of any Ukrainian or other artists, this information is not enough.
Savran and the Ottoman Empire
We open the work: "History of Novorossiysk Territory". In 12 - 14 centuries. a large territory of modern Ukraine was subordinate to the Ottoman Empire. Including the space where the village Savran is located. At that time, we are witnessing opposition from the Tatars and Cossacks. Mutual raids caused the appearance of numerous outposts and patrols. On the territory where Savran is located, a Turkish patrol was organized, under the command of the Janissary Savrasos. This warrior died in one of the clashes with the Ukrainian Cossacks. The military commanders, subordinates of Savrasos, decided to establish a fortress and name it in his honor. Over time, around the fortress began to build houses. Formed a village of craftsmen and merchants. This settlement was called Savran. That is, an abbreviated derivative of Savrasos.
Version of Doctor of History Dashkevich
A lecturer at Lviv State University believes that the word "Savran" should be translated from Turkic as: "the one that drags itself." At the same time, it should be noted that “Savran” has an identical interpretation as the word “sarban” - camel driver. Accordingly, it can be assumed that in the South-East of Podolia, at the beginning of the 14th century. there were camels.
Additional version and conclusions
Recall the legend written by the poet Uvarov. In his work, he cites another interpretation of the word Savran. In particular, there is a version that this word translates as "pit". But the way it is. If you look at the city from the suburbs (for example, from the outskirts of the village of Polyanetsky), then you can really see that Savran is in a lowland. That is, in the pit.
General moments
Anyway, all versions agree on the fact that this word has Turkic roots. At this place was a post of Turkish and Tatar troops. They fought with the Ukrainian Cossacks. The basis of the urban population were Jews, as they dominated the merchants.
Savran is a beautiful city located in the north of Odessa region. No wonder he is considered one of the oldest in the whole Odessa region. In the future, we will continue to talk about this amazing land.
