Visiting Belgorod-Dniester, we cannot help but recall the Ancient Greek City-State of Tire. It was he who was located in this territory. Akkerman fortress was built in the Middle Ages.

Thira - the beginning of the story

The Greek policy was founded by refugees from the city of Miletus. The remains of the city are located in the North-Western part of the Dniester estuary. Please note that in those days the estuary itself did not exist. In those days, the city-state was built on the banks of the Tiras River (this is the ancient name of the Dniester River), which flowed into the Pont Euxinus (Ancient name of the Black Sea) with two arms.

The city was a standard Greek settlement. Here slavery flourished. The townspeople obeyed the college of archons - the executive branch. The supreme power was in the hands of the popular assembly.

Dawn falls on 4 - 3 centuries BC. The settlement was built according to the heppodm system. That is, large rectangles. City-state was protected by high defensive walls. The buildings were 1-story with basements and fenced courtyards.

From the inscriptions that were discovered through excavations, one can understand that the city traded with all the ancient centers of the Northern Black Sea Region, which were located on the Black Sea coast.

In the 80 - 70s of the 2nd century BC, the city fell under the control of the Pontic state. As soon as Mithridates 4 Eupator died, the Getae tribes attacked the city. They were commanded by the king of Burebista. Thira was looted. But, the town was able to quickly recover from a terrible tragedy.

It is important to note that during this period in the city its own silver coin was minted.

Thira and the Roman Empire

In the period from the 1st century BC to the 1st century AD, the Roman Empire began to influence Thira, which founded the Lower Moesia province in the Danube basin. Submission to the Romans is associated with the fact that in the years 56 - 57 of our time a new chronology was introduced in the city.

From the 1st to the 3rd century, Tire was part of Lower Moesia. Yes, local authority and hierarchy have been preserved here. The city was free to trade. On Thira, privileges were extended for the import of goods into the territory of the Roman Empire. Chasing own money continues. But already with the image of the Roman Emperors.

But independence was limited by the constant presence of Roman legionnair

In Tire, people of various nationalities lived. There were Greeks, Romans, Scythians, Sarmatians and representatives of other barbarian peoples.

The decline and destruction of Tyra

In the 3rd century, the Roman Empire withdrew its troops. The city ceased to interest the Romans.

As soon as the garrison left the walls of the city, it was attacked by the Goths. Immediately after them, the city was attacked by the Huns. It is with these barbarian tribes that the destruction of the city is connected. Those residents who were able to survive after the raids left Thira and moved to a new place of residence.

Nowadays

Excavations began in the 20th century. As a result of research in 1900 and 1912, the archaeologist Stern established the location of the city. But the Necropolis has not been discovered to this day.

But for the excavation, we will talk next time. There is something to say. Therefore, we will not be able to limit ourselves to a few words. To be continued…
