The cherry blossom season had reached its peak last week at the central and southern region of Japan. As the blossom continues northward, have you prepared your trip to see it? Or are you gonna miss it this year? Well, here's one more alternative if your trip to Japan is planned for the next 2 months.

If you ask anyone for famous views in Japan, you are likely to hear “Mt Fuji” and “Sakura”. If you are visiting Tokyo between mid April to end May, you must head to the Fuji Shibazakura Festival in Kawaguchiko! The land of pink mosses with the magnificant view of Mt Fuji in the backdrop~~~ trust me, you will forget about your regret of missing the real sakura season. 🙂

The Fuji Shibazakura Festival is an annual event in Kawaguchiko where 800,000 pink and white Shibazakura (a.k.a “lawn cherry”, “moss Plox”) bloom on this landscape at the base of Mt Fuji, forming a postcard perfect view. There is also a food fair next to the main site and stalls selling seasonal sakura-related food and merchandise.

Highly recommended for beautiful instagram shots in the breezy spring, especially if you have not seen Mt Fuji!

JR Vacation’s Tips:

  • There are small lockers found at the festival site which can accommodate cabin size luggage. Don’t worry if you are lugging your luggage to the site from airport like us!
  • It is quite breezy at the site, bring along a thin cardigan.
  • The japanese website http://www.fujiyama-navi.jp/mtfuji-flower/index/page/2/#panorama will show you daily live cam of the shibazakura view. I managed to visit the festival one day prior to closing; it was still beautiful no doubt with much lesser live shibazakura. So I figured the optimal viewing period would in beginning of May.
  • Travelling time to Kawaguchiko takes around 2.5 hours from Tokyo. I would recommend you to stay in Kawaguchiko for a night to enjoy the Mt Fuji view.
