Hello to all of my readers. By all of my readers I mostly mean hello to Tyson and Tilly as I think Ned is functionally illiterate and Mum can only use technology to buy unethically sourced clothing. I have decided to do a travel blog/diary or whatever you want to call it. I am currently sitting in the Brisbane Airport and need to kill a two hour layover so I thought I would start with a quick overview of what these posts will be, what the overall goal is and why I have decided to do it.
Best to start with the why. The first and main reason is pretty simple, I think it will be fun. It will give me something to do at nighttime and will also give me a push to go out and do things during the day instead of laying in apartments doing nothing much.
Secondarily I spent a lot of time this year writing a 150 page novella, which after months of writing and editing and revising got thrown in the bin. It was a saccharine sentimental mess. Somewhere along the way it turned into something someone else would write, all authenticity and honesty fell out of it and it ended up a flaccid attempt. So I want to become more comfortable writing in my own voice and being okay with it being bad.
Thirdarily, I am working on a long term non-fiction project that I've been chipping away at. The main idea is to play the top 100 golf courses in Australia and document my experiences and my rounds at each course. I'll be lucky enough to play three of the top 100 on this trip, as well as 4 world top 100 courses in NZ. Having a real time breakdown of how I was feeling at the time, how I played and how the courses made me feel will be a great resource towards that.
That brings me to the what part of this. What will these posts contain and be? A large part of it will be in depth breakdown of golf courses, their designs, shot by shot breakdowns of how my round went and instant reactions and reviews. Feel free to skip these as I'm sure they will be boring to people not into golf. Probably boring to people into golf as well. There will also be day to day rundowns of anything I've done I feel is worth writing about. Reviews of books, movies and music I consume while I'm away. Maybe some pictures of food I've eaten. A big part of this is it will be stream of consciousness type writing. Pretty much anything I think about or care to write about might be included. It is also on my mind that I will be functionally alone for almost a whole month, I will have no conversations of consequence with anyone. To use an irrigation term, I will have no pressure release valve for the first time in my life. So this shit might get more and more weird as I slowly descend into self induced madness.
I hope you enjoy whatever nonsense I end up writing about and follow along.
P.S - I am listening to the top 100 albums of the 21st century as a way to expand my musical tastes. As I board this flight to Launceston I am up to Missy Elliots 2002 classic Under Construction. I just have this image in my mind of the plane going down and air crash investigators combing through the wreckage to find my phone and return it to my family. A uniformed man tearfully telling Mum and Dad that their son's last moments were scored by Missy Elliot signing 'Work It'. They decide to play it at my funeral to honour me with my secret favourite song. I could not live with that humiliation. I am not listening by choice, I had to let it be known. Please be serious and only play Pop Smoke in the result of my demise.
