Happy start to the week everyone! For my part, I’d like to kick things off by sharing these beautiful photos of Caracas and recounting my latest hiking experience on Worldmappin. After the earthquakes, it was hard for me to decide to go hiking again; and although the rains have been very heavy in the Venezuelan capital, this October I’ve dared to overcome my fears and once again enjoy what life has to offer—even while still taking certain precautions. This time, I revisited the San Bernardino Trail, one of the hiking routes located in the city center.
"Sector Gamboa", that is the actual name of this area on Mount El Ávila, located in northern Caracas. It is one of the routes featuring a concrete road for vehicles; in fact, the road ends just shy of the 4,000 meter mark, right at the "Papelón" park ranger station. I undertook this short trip at the urging of a good friend—who was going with her mother, so I decided to invite my wife along, as she hadn't hiked this trail since March. It wasn't going to be easy after such a long break, but at least our enthusiasm for the hike was at an all time high.
For those who live nearby or have a vehicle to get there easily, this hiking trail can be a daily activity. Generally, people can reach the "Corta Fuegos" area, located 1,200 meters away, though the climb is very steep. Personally, I have managed to make the ascent in under 20 minutes on my best days; it is a perfect way to exercise and enjoy beautiful views of central Caracas, as the location offers a vantage point to see the small mountains to the south and the most iconic buildings of the Libertador Municipality.
I have to admit I was a bit worried about this hike at first; I usually hike with friends, and before the earthquakes, we were at a very high fitness level, but this time, the group included the sister and mother of one of those friends, as well as my wife. My wife hadn't hiked in months and had really struggled with the Sabas Nieves II route in Altamira just a week earlier, yet against all odds, we managed to make it well past the Corta Fuegos (firebreak). Our goal was the Cruz del Ávila, and we achieved it; it took us longer than usual, but it was worth it. In fact, I suggested we hike a little further up to the Papelón Park Ranger station to get water, and they agreed.
To my surprise, and even though I hadn't planned to keep climbing—we discovered that the gates at the "Papelón" ranger station, which lead to the upper part of the trail, were closed. This route is unique because it leads to the summit and connects to the cable car station; unlike other routes in Caracas, if you hike up this way, you can comfortably ride a cabin back down. However, as everyone has noted, many areas near the summit remain badly damaged by the seismic activity from June, and now the rains are adding to the chaos. So, we have to keep waiting and hoping for the best for our city. Perhaps I’m being an alarmist, but there is good reason to be; a lot has happened, and I prefer to take things slower with activities like this until I feel as secure as I did when I first started 🙏
