France Square in Altamira, Venezuela

Happy start to the weekend everyone! Today, I want to share my admiration for my own country, and specifically for the city where I live, even though I have to make a short trip to reach this area, which actually belongs to a different municipality. The photos I’m sharing here are of Plaza Francia de Altamira in the Chacao Municipality of Miranda State; this area is also part of Venezuela's Capital District. This popular square and beautiful neighborhood is one of the city's iconic landmarks. It sits right in the middle of what I’d venture to call the most powerful sector in terms of prestigious companies, the economy, and embassies. And just between us, walking through the Chacao Municipality feels very different, and much more modern, compared to my own neighborhood in the downtown Libertador Municipality.

¡Feliz inicio del fin de semana para todos!. Hoy quiero compartir un poco de admiración por mi propio país y de hecho de la ciudad donde vivo, aunque tenga que hacer un pequeño viaje hasta esta zona que realmente pertenece a otro municipio. Las fotografías que les comparto en esta oportunidad son de la Plaza Francia de Altamira del Municipio Chacao del estado Miranda, que a la vez, forma parte del Distrito Capital de Venezuela. Esta popular plaza y esta hermosa zona es uno de los lugares icónicos de la ciudad y se encuentra en medio del que me atrevo a decir es el sector más poderoso en empresas de prestigio, economía y embajadas, y aquí entre nos, caminar en el Municipio Chacao se siente muy diferente y modernos en comparación a mi zona del centro en el Municipio Libertador.

In one of my previous posts, I mentioned that the Chacao Municipality was the area hardest hit by the double earthquake of June 24, 2026; surprisingly, just two blocks up from this square, buildings collapsed and many people lost their lives. I took these photographs during my last visit to the area, and the beauty of Plaza Francia de Altamira moves me deeply; I know I am standing on some of the most seismically active ground in the city, and possibly the country, yet the square features significant monuments and withstood the event with elegance. Like many other locations, it serves as a place of refuge and community gathering during times like those. Many buildings, and even the Caracas Metro, surround or run beneath the square, but that building with the black-and-white stripes—the prestigious Hotel Palace, is usually what catches the eye of an architecture lover like me, which is why I make sure it looks its best in my photos.

En alguno de mis posts anteriores les comenté que el Municipio Chacao era el más afectado por el doblete sísmico del 24 de Junio de 2026, y sorprendentemente a solo dos cuadras más arriba de esta plaza se cayeron algunos edificios y murió mucha gente. Estas fotografías las tomé en mi última visita a esta zona y la belleza de la Plaza Francia de Altamira me estremece, ya que sé que estoy pisando uno de los suelos más sísmicos de la ciudad y posiblemente del país, que tiene monumentos importantes y que al mismo tiempo resistió con elegancia, y como muchos otros lugares, resulta ser un lugar de resguardo y encuentro para la comunidad en momentos como esos. Muchas edificaciones e incluso el Metro de Caracas rodean y pasan debajo de esta plaza, pero ese edificio de franjas blancas y negras, el prestigiosos Hotel Palace suele ser lo más llamativo para un amante de la arquitectura como yo, por eso me encargo de que luzca muy bien en las fotografías.

There are two interesting facts about this place that I loved when I first visited in 2013, given that I am not originally from the Venezuelan capital. The square is also known as Plaza Altamira, a name that actually makes more sense, given its location in the heart of that neighborhood—but locals from Caracas told me there was an agreement between Paris and Venezuela to establish a Plaza Francia in Caracas and a Plaza Venezuela in the European country. Just between us, I don't even know if such a square actually exists over there; I’ll have to go and find out, though my wife mentioned there is a statue of Simón Bolívar in Paris, which is surely a good sign 😅 The other interesting detail I loved, which I discovered while reading about the city's art and architecture, was learning that its developer was Luis Roche. That is the same name as the avenue located to the right, between the square and the hotel; I thought that was fantastic. It made me even happier that a person who so deeply influenced the creation of this beautiful city is honored in so many ways, including having an avenue named after him right next to what I would venture to call his finest urban planning achievement.

Hay dos curiosidades de este lugar que amé cuando lo conocí en 2013, ya que no soy originario de la capital venezolana. Esta plaza también es conocida como Plaza Altamira, y de hecho es un nombre más lógico por ubicarse en el centro de esta urbanización, pero los mismos nativos caraqueños me comentaron que hubo un convenio entre París y Venezuela, para que hubiera una Plaza Francia en Caracas y una Plaza Venezuela en el país europeo. Aquí entre nos ni siquiera sé si exista tal plaza allá, tendré que ir para averiguarlo, aunque mi esposa me comentó que hay una estatua de Simón Bolívar en París, ya eso debe ser un buen indicio 😅 la otra curiosidad que amé fue enterarme mientras leía sobre el arte y la arquitectura de la ciudad que su constructor fue Luis Roche, justo como el nombre de la avenida que queda a la derecha entre la plaza y el hotel, y eso me pareció genial, y me alegré aún más de que una persona que influyó tanto en la creación de esta hermosa ciudad tenga su nombre posterizado en tantos honores, incluyendo una avenida al lado de lo que me atrevo a decir fue su mejor trabajo en urbanismo.

I feel like I’ve let you down a bit this time regarding the number of photos. I was at Plaza Francia in Altamira right at midday, and—believe it or not—the heat in Caracas is more intense than ever. I used to think the heat here in Venezuela couldn't possibly get any worse, but you know how our country loves to surprise us 🤣 There are a few other details I hope to photograph when I return—and hopefully learn more about—such as the statue of the Miraculous Virgin; I found it strange that it wasn't located in front of the Obelisk like it was the last time I visited a few years ago... Speaking of the Obelisk, I have to highlight that it is the plaza's most prominent feature and is visible from anywhere. At night, it lights up in the tricolor hues of our flag, and it’s usually the most popular spot in Caracas for ringing in the New Year. Standing in front of the Obelisk and looking north offers a view of the beautiful El Ávila Mountain in the background, the very image I used to start and end this post, as it is one of the best views I’ve ever seen, whether it’s cloudy or clear, day or night. This place is magical and easily accessible... You simply have to visit Plaza Francia in Altamira at least once 😍

En esta oportunidad siento que les he fallado con las cantidad de fotografías. Estuve en la Plaza Francia de Altamira exactamente a medio día, y aunque no me crean, el calor en Caracas está más fuerte que nunca, y yo pensaba que aquí en Venezuela el calor ya no podría aumentar más, pero ya saben que nuestro país tiende a sorprendernos 🤣 Hay algunos otros detalles que espero fotografiar cuando regrese, y así tengo más oportunidad de averiguar sobre ellos, como por ejemplo la imanen de la Virgen Milagrosa, que me pareció extraño que no se encontrara frente al Obelisco como lo vi la ultima vez que viaje hasta aquí hace algunos años... Ya que nombro el Obelisco, necesito destacar que es la característica más importante de la plaza y que se aprecia desde cualquier lugar. En las noche se ilumina de los colores tricolor de nuestra bandera y suele ser el centro más popular en Caracas para recibir el año nuevo. Pararse frente a este obelisco y ver hacia el norte es apreciar la belleza de la Montaña El Ávila al fondo, la imagen con la que comienzo y termino este post por ser una de las mejores vistas que he apreciado en mi vida, sea un día nublado, despejado, de día o de noche. Este lugar es mágico y de fácil acceso... Hay que visitar la Plaza Francia de Altamira al menos una vez 😍
