During my recent visit to Stari Slankamen, I had the opportunity to see one of the oldest churches in my country, Serbia. It is the Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas in the village of Stari Slankamen or Old Slankamen, located in Vojvodina province in Serbia, on the bank of the Danube river. It is very old church and it dates back to the 15th century.
In one of my previous posts, I wrote about the St. Nicholas Catholic Church in this place. It is obvious that the natives of this place loved and respected the same saint in both religions. They considered him their protector and so it is nowadays.
The Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas, like many other medieval churches in my country, was destroyed and rebuilt many times during the war history. But this church is known to have its present appearance from the 18th century onwards.
When you approach it, it looks imposing although very simple.
The walls are massive and proudly stand the test of time.
It was closed when we arrived and unfortunately we didn't get to see the inside of the church. And it was incredibly peaceful and quiet. We didn't meet any locals nearby.
The church is surrounded by greenery and a spacious yard.
There are steps leading down the hill to the bank of the Danube. As it is on a hill, the church offers a beautiful view of the whole place, and when the weather is clear, you can also see the river down there.
Although religiosity is not so close to me, I feel great respect and admiration for such old churches. The very fact that it exists and survives for so long deserves respect.
And its door hides millions of stories about people in the past who have been coming there for years, carrying faith and hope for a better days.
