Walking through Stari Slankamen, a village in Vojvodina, province of Serbia, which I wrote about in my previous post, we found an interesting historical place. It is the Acumincum winery, named after the medieval fortress of the same name.
What is fascinating about this winery is that it was built on the foundations of a medieval Turkish bath called a "hamam" dating back to the 16th century. The house where the winery is located was built in the 18th century, while the remains of the hammam served as the foundations of the rectory of the Catholic Church of St. Nicholas. While walking, we first came across the church.
The door was open, so we decided to go inside and take a look at its interior.
It is an old Catholic church, dedicated to St. Nicholas, the saint protector of sailors and travelers, the common saint of the West and the East.
It's very simple inside.
There were pictures, painted using the oil on canvas technique.
In the church were two ladies who kindly invited us to come in and have a look at their beloved saint.
The church is located right next to the Acumincum winery, where we then headed.
We entered the courtyards and saw a lot of beautiful decorations and read sayings about wine written on the hanging wooden decorations. One of them was, "If bread symbolizes work, then wine symbolizes joy."
It was very nice and neat.
We were greeted by a friendly host and asked if we were interested in wine or history. 😊 We told him that this time we were interested in history, but that we would also try wine on another occasion.
First we entered the winery where everything was prepared for some elegant event.
And then we entered the basement part of the winery which is decorated with the remains of a Turkish bath from the 16th century.
It's fascinating inside. The atmosphere is very pleasant and there are many interesting exhibits.
As there is a source of healing water in the immediate vicinity, the Turks took advantage of it and built a steam bath, one of the few preserved in the territory of Serbia.
My children were also delighted with the atmosphere inside and went from one room to another and explored.
Everything smells of the past there and in combination with good wine you can experience incredible moments if you are a lover of wine and history. The winery is open for events and the remains of the Turkish bath are protected as a cultural monument of great value.
After visiting the winery we crossed the street to see what the view of the Danube river was like there and stayed there for a while because it was very soothing and beautiful.
Thank you very much for reading.
The images and writing are original and mine.
Greetings!
Jelena
