After visiting Krusedol monastery which I wrote about in my previous post, I headed with my family to the historic village of Stari Slankamen, translated from Serbian as Old Slankamen. It is located in the north of Serbia, in the province of Vojvodina.

As you drive down the winding road to this beautiful village on the banks of the Danube river, you come across the remains of a medieval fortress that testify to the historical value of this place.

When I saw the walls of the fortress, I was fascinated because it looked much bigger and more powerful than in the photos I had seen before.

The settlement of this place is evidenced by archeological discoveries dating back to prehistoric times, and the fortress was built in the 11th century by the Romans on the foundations that was built by the Celts. It is called Acumincum.

I got out of the car and approached the stairs that led to the hill where the remains of the fortress are located.

There was also a large cross on the hill.

I could not approach close to the fortress, but I enjoyed the stunning views from above.

In later years, the fortress was taken over by the Turks and had a strategic purpose. It was suitable for observing the entire town and protecting it.

The name Slankamen means salt stone, and it got its name from the spring of salt water that makes this place considered a spa.

Salt water from this spring is used for the treatment of various diseases, and from there it is carried to the hospital, which is famous for healing. The spring has also been used since the Middle Ages when the Acumincum fortress was built.

After viewing the fortress, we went down to the Danube river.

The locals told us that we must try the fish soup in one of the restaurants by the river, so we headed there. We sat down in the first restaurant by the river, called "Quay".

The soup was delicious and spicy.

Children don't like spicy food, so we ordered fried perch for them.

We had a great time, away from the hustle and bustle of the city in a place that took us through history and led to delicious riverside food and beautiful evening.

In Slankamen, we visited several other historical sights, which I will write about in my next posts.

Thank you very much for reading.

The images and writing are original and mine.

Greetings!
