Z vítkovických komínů už se na město nesnáší popílek a před píchačkami se po skončení směny též dávno netvoří fronty. Přesto je v areálu bývalých vítkovických železáren stále živo. Jen muže umazané od mouru a nasáklé pachem černého koksu vystřídaly skupiny turistů a rodiny s dětmi.

Na novou skleněnou vyhlídkovou restauraci Bolt Tower je často nutné rezervovat vstup s předstihem několika týdnů. Jakmile vysvitne slunce, zaplní se i ostatní kavárny, například ta, co sdílí prostor s infocentremí v bývalém plynojemu. Budova U6 se mezitím stala rájem malých badatelů a budoucích vědců – nachází se zde Malý svět techniky, zatímco v další budově sídlí Velký svět techniky.

When the sun comes out, the cafés fill quickly as well, including the one next to the information centre housed inside the former gas holder. The U6 building has become a paradise for young explorers and future scientists, home to the Small World of Technology, while the neighbouring building hosts the Great World of Technology.
Při pohledu z dálky však bývalý železárenský kolos stále působí jako království šrotu nemilosrdně požíraného rzí. Přesto má tento industriální pozůstatek minulých časů, v němž nesčetné zástupy dělníků propotily tisíce pracovních košil, své osobité kouzlo. Všudypřítomné potrubí a spletité dopravníky vytvářejí labyrint připomínající spořiče obrazovek z devadesátých let. Do těchto kulis dnes denně míří tisíce lidí za sportem, kulturou, zábavou i poznáním.
EN: From a distance, however, the massive industrial structure still looks like a kingdom of scrap metal slowly devoured by rust. Even so, this relic of the industrial age possesses a peculiar charm. Countless workers once spent their days here, sweating through endless shifts and leaving pieces of their lives behind in its steel skeleton. The pipes and conveyor systems crisscross the site like an enormous maze, reminding me of the screensavers that flickered across computer monitors in the 1990s. Today, thousands of people come here every day in search of sport, entertainment, culture, and knowledge.
Mnoho zaměstnanců železáren kdysi žilo v typických neomítnutých cihlových dvojdomcích. Dodnes je fascinující kontrast mezi cihlami očištěnými od sazí a těmi, na nichž se tmavá stopa průmyslové minulosti stále drží.
EN: Many of the workers once lived in the characteristic unplastered brick duplex houses nearby. What remains striking even today is the contrast between bricks that have been cleaned of soot and those that still bear the dark marks of the industrial past.
Představa života ve Vítkovicích před čtyřiceti lety mi připadá téměř děsivá. Náročnou práci v hlučném a nebezpečném prostředí zamořeném smogem nevyvážila ani na tehdejší dobu nadprůměrná mzda. Současná perspektiva Vítkovic se však zdá mnohem světlejší. Možná symbolicky i proto, že muž, který dnes přetváří někdejší tovární komplex v živé kulturní centrum, se jmenuje Světlík.
EN: Trying to imagine what life here was like forty years ago feels unsettling. The exhausting work, the deafening noise, and the smog-filled air could hardly have been compensated even by what was then considered a good wage. The future of Vítkovice seems far brighter now.
