We stopped off in Lisbon for a few days on our way from London to the Azores, so I had a change to explore parts of Lisbon I'd never been to before. We had an apartment in an area called Belem, which is out of of the city centre, yet near the river, and close to many of Lisbon's museums, galleries, and gardens.
This was my first experience of the latest phenomenon sweeping the world, that of the electric scooter. They're only just beginning to be seen in the UK but in Lisbon they were everywhere. I was impressed by the ability to find them on any street corner and just jump on and ride.
I downloaded the app and decided to have a go, and what great fun! It was great to have a scoot around the park at speed.
On our final morning I had some credit left, so I took the opportunity to go for an extended ride on a scooter. It was about 3 miles into the centre of Lisbon so I thought I'd give it a go. It was quiet and cool, and a great way to see the riverside, from the marinas and harbours, to contemporary architecture, and big features like the suspension bridge close up. A big feature of Lisbon is The Sanctuary of Christ the King, which is inspired by the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio, combined with the suspension bridge it's a wonderful sight!
It was great to see another side of Lisbon, and great to use the scooter, although it was mostly fun on the smooth pathways, where it felt like you were flying. The cobbled pathways though don't really work with the lack of suspension, swings and roundabouts as they say...
