Many people are unaware that Croatia, besides occupying a vast coastal strip of the Adriatic Sea, also spans about 1,300 islands. While the majority of these islands are small islets, cliffs, and reefs, around 50 are permanently inhabited, with others suitable for summer camping. It comes as no surprise, that the allure of the Adriatic Sea attracts yachters from all corners of the globe. In addition to various yachts and private sails, there are regular ferry lines to the main islands. Currently, my girlfriend and I are in Zadar, a historical town with a population of 75,000, in the midst of the Croatian coastline. Exploring the neighboring islands of Ugljan and Pašman is an absolute must, so we took a ferry yesterday.

Spousta lidí neví, že Chorvatsko se může pochlubit asi třinácti sty ostrovy. Pravda, spousta z nich jsou jen ostrůvky, útesy nebo holé skály, ale asi 50 je trvale obydlených. Na některých dalších je možné alespoň kempovat. A tak nepřekvapí, že Jadran láká jachtaře ze všech koutů světa. Kromě jacht a soukromých plaveb nejen pro turisty tu samozřejmě funguje pravidelná trajektová doprava. A protože jsme s T. v Zadaru, asi pětasedmdesátitisícovém historickém městě zhruba uprostřed Dalmácie, vynechat sousední velké ostrovy Ugljan a Pašman by byla škoda. Jeli jsme trajektem.

If my travel reports inspire you to visit Zadar, there are some important things to keep in mind. Renting a car here is remarkably affordable, with prices as low as 6.5 euros per day (I'll delve into this in a future post). However, when it comes to embarking on a ferry, you'll need to purchase insurance with extra coverage, which triples the fare. Unfortunately, this insurance cannot be arranged for just the single day you plan to take the ferry. It's also worth noting that boarding a ferry with a vehicle can be a bit tricky. Queues are common, and there are no booking options available, so it's necessary to arrive early enough to secure a spot.

Additionally, not all ferries accommodate cars, bikes, or even bicycles. Those departing from Zadar city center do not, meaning you'll need to make your way to the main port at the southern edge of Zadar. To ensure accurate schedules and capacities, I initially attempted to contact the state-owned ferry company, Jadrolinija, using the numbers provided on their website. Unfortunately, none of them seemed to work. Thankfully, we received helpful advice from a lady at the bike rental shop where we got our bikes. I highly recommend inquiring about schedules at the tourist information center or your hotel reception before heading to the port solely relying on possibly outdated online information.

Pokud vás moje zápisky inspirují k návštěvě Zadaru, měli byste si zapamatovat důležitých věcí. Auto si tu půjčíte doslova za hubičku, klidně za nějakých 6,5 eura na den. Tomu se ještě budu věnovat. Ale když se s ním budete chtít vypravit na ostrovy, musíte si sjednat speciální připojištění. To je dražší než samotné půjčovné, cenu nafoukne asi třikrát. Pojistku navíc nejde sjednat jen na jeden den, kdy se chystáte přeplavit, a tak by z nějakých šedesáti euro najednou bylo 250, tedy v našem případě. Na trajekty kromě toho neexistuje žádný rezervační systém, a tak se čeká ve frontě a nalodí se ten, pro koho je místo. Ostatní musí čekat na další loď.

Ne všechny trajekty navíc převáží auta, motorky nebo i kola. Ty, co plují z přístavu v centru města, nikoli, a tak jsme museli vyrazit na jižní konec Zadaru k hlavnímu přístavu. Abych si ověřil plavební řády a výše uvedená omezení, chtěl jsem zavolat přímo chorvatskému státnímu lodnímu dopravci Jadrolinija, ale žádné z čísel na webu nefungovalo. Naštěstí nám pomohla obsluha v půjčovně kol, která nás nasměrovala na správnou loď do správného přístavu. Rozhodně doporučuju si jízdní řády a další údaje ověřit v turistickém centru nebo na recepci hotelu, než vyrazíte do přístavu jen na základě online plavebních řádů, které nemusí být úplně aktuální.

Since we traveled with rented bikes, boarding the ferry was a breeze, taking only a minute of our time. While waiting for our own ferry, I took the opportunity to capture some photographs of the other vessels in the port. Zadar has several regular ferry lines to the nearest Croatian islands, Slovenia and Italy. I made sure to capture the arrival of our ferry, the Jadran, and I couldn't resist taking snapshots of the passengers disembarking as well - they looked like dogs waiting for feeding. No offense. We looked exactly the same when we were about to disembark.

Zadar má pravidelné spojení s okolními chorvatskými ostrovy, Slovinskem a Itálií. Udělal jsem taky pár fotek našeho trajektu, Jadranu, jak připlouvá do přístavu. A lidí, kteří se nemohli dočkat vylodění, jako psi kteří čekají na krmení. Nic proti, my o hodinku později vypadali zrovna tak, když jsme přistáli na Ugljan.

Despite the Jadran being one of the largest ferries in the port, the embarking was surprisingly quick, taking approximately 15 minutes. The ferry features two levels for cars and has enough space for vans and even buses. I noticed that the Croatian police also utilize the ferries. I guess they enjoy the privilege of priority boarding and are exempt from paying fares.

I když je Jadran jeden z největších trajektů v přístavu, nalodění zabralo jen asi čtvrthodinku. Na lodi jsou dvě patra pro auta, a taky dost místa pro dodávky, a dokonce i autobusy. Mimochodem, trajekty očividně využívá i chorvatská policie. Hádám, že policisté asi ve frontě čekat nebudou, a za plavbu asi taky neplatí.

Even though the sail takes about half an hour, there’s a lobby bar with an ATM – cards are not accepted there. I preferred to stay on the top deck taking some pictures along the way.

I když plavba trvá asi půlhodinku, na lodi je lobby bar s bankomatem. Karty totiž nepřijímají. Já raději zůstal na horní palubě a fotil moře. Moji Češi mi jistě rozumějí :)
