We might live in Valencia, but it’s not where our families live. Mike is from Ohio, originally, and Jürgen is from the city of Darmstadt, Germany, just 20 minutes south of Frankfurt. Considering Valencia’s lack of an international airport, our travels often bring us through Frankfurt, and whenever we’re there, we make plans to spend a few days visiting the fam.
We were last there for a week, in late June. That gave us enough time to pack in some sightseeing, get some work done, and enjoy multiple schnitzels and a hearty amount of beer. It felt great to be back in the city during the summer months, when the biergartens are packed and everyone is enjoying the balmy weather.
Summer in Darmstadt is lovely, and we went out every evening to enjoy the buzz. So by the end of the week, we had gathered a nice little collection of great places in the city to enjoy a sunset.
Probably our favorite spot is the Mathildenhöhe, a UNESCO World Heritage Spot, known for its stunning Jugendstil architecture. This neighborhood is backed with unique homes, a Russian Chapel, and they city’s famous Fünffingerturm (Five Finger Tower). The only danger with going to see the sunset here, is being so consumed by the architecture, that you forget to watch the sky!
We also love the plaza in front of the Staatstheater, where the youngsters of Darmstadt tend to hang out. It’s a cool moment when the lights of the theater and the nearby St. Ludwig’s Church go on. Fun fact, the church is often referred to Käseglocke (cheese bell), because… well… that’s what it resembles.
We can also recommend packing a picnic to enjoy the evening hour at Darmstadt’s Herrengarten, a park directly in the city center which is frequented by students from the nearby TU (Technische Universität Darmstadt).
And a rather new addition to great sunset spots in Darmstadt is the summer terrace at Henschel Darmstadt, an upscale department store. This is a really lovely spot to have drinks or dinner, with views over the Schloss and Marktplatz.
