It would never cease to amaze me the things we would find and learn along our travels in Europe. Hadrians wall was built around the year 100 as a suspected defensive fortification as a way to protect and separate Romans. Although some of it has now been destroyed or is in differing degrees of disrepair, it is still possible to walk along vast quantity of the wall to get an idea of how impressive it is.
Hadrians wall is around 117Kms in total! The wall has differing heights along the wall, with it suspected to have been around 3 metres high when it was built. It is possible to visit and check out alot of the wall, with some people walking along it for many kilometers. Along the wall there are many forts, which are thought to be have been lookouts for defensive purposes.
Although it is a major tourist attraction we didnt find it too busy. Probably because it is so long! Along the way there is some information, and also other people around to talk to about the wall - people here are (mostly) friendly! There are various entries to visit the wall, and if coming by car most will require a fee for parking.
If you are in the UK and interested in history (or just want a walk along a very old wall!), then checking out Hadrians wall is a great choice. As you can see from above, the UK is very green as it rains alot! So (even in summer months) be prepared for this.
All photos taken by me. Will also be posted on my Hive blog :)
