Punto.

In questi giorni i boschi qui intorno stanno diventando gialli, arancioni e rossi. Morte e rinascita. Semplifico, ma il senso è quello.

Quante volte sei morta?

Combatti, scappi o ti fingi morto? Io le ho provate tutte e tre.

🇬🇧 Good Evening at 1 PM: In Praise of Shades

When I answer the phone I say "Ca' Paradiso, good morning" or "good evening". And here, in the mountains around Cagli, I had to learn something that threw me at first.

In northern Italy, where I come from, you say buonasera, "good evening", when you leave work, towards the end of the day. Here people say it at one in the afternoon. Lunch is over, so it's evening. Full stop.

I told Giovanna about it, laughing, and she said that in Romagna, just north of here, after lunch they say "good afternoon", that she says it everywhere, and that "good evening" at 1 PM sounds a bit excessive to her.

Zero and one

So I tried to explain it to myself as a computer guy, which was my job for forty years: here time is binary. Zero and one. Morning or evening. No in-between, no discussion.

I saw something wise in it: keeping life simple. Giovanna saw something she didn't like:

"It's not simplifying. It's removing the shades. You can choose to simplify your life, that's your choice and I respect it. But it's like blacking out the colours of autumn and spring and saying: either winter or summer. Where is the beauty, then?"

She's right. The beauty lives exactly there, in the seasons in between.

Spring and autumn

Spring is an explosion of life. We agreed on that straight away.

On autumn we teased each other a bit. I called it "the preparation for winter's death". She stopped me:

"But autumn is an explosion of colour too! Trees don't die, they just let their leaves fall."

These days the woods around here are turning yellow, orange and red. It's true, there is nothing dead in those colours. I explained what I meant: by "death" I mean the end of a cycle, and by spring the start of a new one. Death and rebirth. I simplify, but that's the idea.

How many times have you died?

So I asked her the question that had been buzzing in my head:

"And you, Giovanna, how many times have you died in your life? The old Giovanna died and a new one was born, more colourful, with more flowers?"

Her answer surprised me more than the 1 PM good evening:

"I am like this because I wanted to be like this. I became like this when I was five. And I have always stayed me."

I insisted: surely you changed many times after that. And she, steady:

"The fundamental thing in life is being yourself. Finding out what the 'I' is, and being yourself always, no matter what. In the heart, not in thoughts. Not in the mind."

I had to take my hat off. Managing the mind, not letting it drag you around, is one of the hardest jobs there is. I have been working on it for years and I only have a sprinkle of it. If she has done it, she's brilliant.

Two ways of looking at the same thing

Reading the transcript again, I realised we were probably saying the same thing from two different sides.

I talk about death and rebirth: the skin changes, falls off, renews itself. She talks about what stays: the core, the "I", the part that never dies. A tree loses its leaves every autumn, but it is always the same tree. Maybe the leaves are my "Giovannas who die", and the tree is her "Giovanna who stays".

She also said something else, almost in passing:

"The survival instinct leads you to discover and use things other people don't even know exist."

Anyone who has been through a few long winters knows what she means.

The tree doesn't know what day it is

I thought about it again a little later, when I confessed something to her: if it weren't for the guests and the booking calendar, I would never know what day it is, what date, what month. I understand the season, and that's enough for me.

A tree doesn't know what day it is, and it couldn't care less. Time is a human invention to put events in a row. The tree only knows whether it's spring or autumn.

Maybe the "good evening at 1 PM" of the people of the Marche comes from exactly this: from people who have always looked at the sun and the soil before looking at the clock. Morning is when you work with the rising light, evening is when the sun starts to go down. Two times, like farmers have.

But Giovanna is right: even the setting sun has a thousand shades. It would be a shame to miss them.

The seed to take home: you can change your skin a thousand times without ever stopping being yourself. And in life, as in the seasons, the most beautiful parts are often in the middle.

In the next seed: what do you do when someone attacks you? Fight, flee or play dead? I have tried all three.
