On our last trip to Australia, we found ourselves in the region of Torquay for quite a bit... so we had lots of time to remind ourselves about the famed Australian coffees... the flat whites and how so many people just rave on about how great the coffees are in Australia...

I do remember a time when I thought that Australian coffees were decent... but I'm starting to wonder if my tastes have changed!

Anyway, this Surf Cost Wholefoods was one of many cafes that we went to... actually, this was an interesting mix of cafe with a organic/health food store attached... or was that a food store with a cafe attached?

The Space

Like I said... it is a large area, that is divided into a large food and health food section... more akin to a local store or delicatessen... with an equally large area devoted to the cafe, with light meals, coffees and lots of interesting looking treats on offer!

The place is surrounded by lots of large glass windows... making for a nice atmosphere of open natural light, even in the winter time! Although the light of the photo doesn't really show it, on this particular day, the outside was hellishly windy and cold... and overcast.

The large wooden tables and decent spacing make for a nice place to just sit and enjoy a hot drink for a while... and then on the way out, you can browse the store for some decent food to take with you!

The Menu

Although there is a lunch menu.... we were there for coffees... and something tasty to go with it! So, everything that we would want was on display... and all of it looked so good!

The Food

Well... seeing as this a Coffee Tasteem post, it will have to feature the coffee first! A pretty standard Cappucino... in the Australian style! Since being in Europe for the past decade or so, I've had quite a variety of coffees across the many nations that fracture the European mainland... and let us just say that it is a mixed bunch.

Coming back to Australia, I have found that the Flat Whites and Cappucinos that are my favoured styles of coffee... are just waaaaaaayyyyyy tooooooo milky for my taste! I often feel a little bloated afterwards... I'm not sure if they have always been like that (probably...) or that my tastes have changed (probably...)... but I find it just too much for me these days...

It isn't terrible as such... but I think I will stick to short blacks from now!

.... maybe I am getting old! These creamy mint and Raspberry slices would have been a huge hit when I was younger... now I find them way too rich in taste! Or perhaps it is the Australian way of things again... I find the French and German styles of dessert to be less overwhelming... Still, it was very good... just a bit too much for one person (this was to share between three...).

The Experience

SufCoast Wholefoods is an interesting experience... it is a nice place to come and shop for some really good health/organic style foods... but the fact that it has a pretty decent cafe attached is a huge bonus!

The place is a comfortable place to come and sit for a while... and the food and coffee is decent... however, I think that my time away from Australia has changed my tastes... this is a place that would have been a definite favourite when I last lived here a decade or two ago... now, I find myself craving different things in coffee and desserts!
