Nature always reclaims what was once hers if humans neglect what they once built for themselves. This is why you are here looking at these photos of a university in partial abandonment, whose spaces instead of being full of students and academic activity, are full of vegetation and even fauna, as you will see below. I must admit that abandoned places catch my attention a bit, and I even tried to capture photos as attractive as possible, but it's still food for thought.
La naturaleza siempre reclama lo que una vez fue suyo si el humano descuida lo que una vez construyó para si. Este es el motivo por el cual te encuentras acá viendo estas fotos de una universidad en abandono parcial, cuyos espacios en lugar de estar repletos de estudiantes y actividad académica, están repletos de vegetación e incluso fauna, tal como verás más abajo. Debo admitir que los lugares abandonados me llaman un poco la atención, e incluso traté de capturar fotos lo más atractivas posibles, pero aún así es para reflexionar acerca de ello.
The Central University of Venezuela, at its Maracay campus, is bigger than I thought it would be. I studied engineering at the Caracas campus, a very large university with lots of buildings, spaces and corridors. You can find a couple of videos I made about it on my #3Speak channel. It was the first time I walked through the Maracay Campus, which was built for the Agronomy and Veterinary Faculties. And it was there that I became aware of the great magnitude of this university, with ample spaces and a good number of buildings and facilities. It has nothing to envy to the main campus, the University City of Caracas. In fact, being Maracay a quieter and more peaceful city than Caracas, this campus, with its ample green spaces, might even be a better place to study.
La Universidad Central de Venezuela, en su sede de Maracay, es más grande de lo que pensé. Estudié Ingeniería en la sede de Caracas, una universidad muy amplia con gran cantidad de edificios, espacios y pasillos. Puedes encontrar un par de videos que realicé sobre ella en mi canal de #3Speak. Fue la primera vez que caminé por el Campus de Maracay, el cual fue construido para las Facultades de Agronomía y Veterinaria. Y fue allí cuando entré en consciencia de la gran magnitud de esta universidad, con amplios espacios y una buena cantidad de edificios e instalaciones. No tiene nada que envidiarle a la sede principal, la Ciudad Universitaria de Caracas. De hecho, al ser Maracay una ciudad más tranquila y verde que Caracas, esta sede, con sus amplios espacios verdes, podría incluso ser un mejor lugar para estudiar.
All or almost all of it is in disuse and abandonment. Actually, I captured these photos in passing, since this university was not the destination but you have to walk through it to get to a tourist place located in the mountains outside the city of Maracay. That place is a well and waterfall, located at the base of the mountains of the Henry Pittier National Park called "Pozo del Diablo". In a next post I will show more of it. I like to take pictures of places I visit, so here is the result. However, the photos in this post are just a small part of what is the whole UCV Maracay. Someday I would like to get to know this university completely.
Todo o casi todo de ello se encuentra en desuso y abandono. En realidad, estas fotos las capturé de paso, ya que dicha universidad no era el destino sino que se debe caminar a través de ella para llegar a un lugar turístico ubicado en las montañas a las afueras de la ciudad de Maracay. Ese lugar es un pozo y cascada, ubicado en la base de las montañas del Parque Nacional Henry Pittier llamado "Pozo del Diablo". En un próximo post mostraré más de ello. Me gusta tomar fotos de lugares que visito, y por ello acá está el resultado. Sin embargo, las fotos de esta publicación son solo una pequeña parte de lo que es toda la UCV Maracay. Algún día me gustaría conocer esta universidad por completo.
Beyond the "attractiveness" of the photos of abandoned places, the key word here is: maintenance. Unlike other Latin American and Third World countries, Venezuela is full of infrastructure, of good quality in many cases, which is unmaintained. This leads us to reflect on what we should do as a society to give life back to these spaces so that they have a useful purpose, and not waste them with all the potential they have and had. I am one of those who think that instead of waiting for a "superior entity" to carry out this maintenance for us, something should happen among the civil society so that it becomes responsible and capable of self-sustaining itself without the dependence of a central entity (here in Hive we don't like "central entities", do we?). But well, that is another topic.
Más allá de lo "atractivo" de las fotos de los lugares abandonados, la palabra clave aquí es: mantenimiento. A diferencia de otros países de Latinoamérica y del Tercer Mundo, Venezuela está repleta de infraestructura, de buena calidad en muchos casos, la cual se encuentra descuidada. Esto nos lleva a la reflexión acerca de qué debemos hacer como sociedad para volver a darle vida a estos espacios para que tengan un fin útil, y no desaprovecharlos con todo el potencial que tienen y tenían. Soy de los que piensan que en lugar de esperar que un "ente superior" ejecute ese mantenimiento por nosotros, algo debe suceder entre la sociedad de a pie para que esta se haga responsable y sea capaz de auto sustentarse sin la dependencia de un ente central (acá en Hive no nos gustan los "entes centrales" ¿Verdad?). Pero bueno, eso es otro tema.
I mentioned fauna above. Well if you walk through this university these days you might find a capuchin monkey wandering around on the path. And I wouldn't be surprised if other types of wildlife have taken places in the facilities there to live. This Nucleus is home to the Veterinary Faculty, so some other animals do or did make a life there. On the way to the Pozo del Diablo more facilities can be found in the middle of the fields, all or almost all of them abandoned. Maybe in some not too distant future this Campus will be fully functional again, and if so, I will go and take pictures and videos to make the comparison with what was seen in this post.
Mencioné fauna arriba. Pues si caminas por esta universidad actualmente podrías encontrarte en el camino con un mono capuchino vagando en los alrededores. Y no me sorprendería que otros tipos de fauna hayan tomado lugares de las instalaciones de allí para vivir. En este Núcleo se encuentra la Facultad de Veterinaria, por lo que algunos otros animales hacen o hacían vida allí. En el camino hacia el Pozo del Diablo se pueden encontrar más instalaciones en medio de los campos, todas o casi todas abandonadas. Quizás en algún futuro no muy lejano este Campus vuelva a funcionar por completo, y si es así, iré a tomar fotos y videos para hacer la comparativa con lo visto en este post.
