Margarita Island has a lot of history. Today I present you one of the historical monuments of the city of La Asunción, capital of the state of Nueva Esparta.All the images are mine, using my Samsung ST500 compact camera.

La isla de Margarita alberga mucha historia. Hoy les presento uno de los monumentos históricos de la ciudad de La Asunción, capital del Estado Nueva Esparta.Todas las imágenes son mías, usando mi cámara compacta Samsung ST500.

The Fortress of Santa Rosa de La Eminencia was built in the 17th century to protect itself from invading pirates. From this hill you can see the sea to the east. This star-shaped castle covered three defensive fronts. Of course, its location would not be the work of chance or improvisation.

La Fortaleza de Santa Rosa de La Eminencia fue construida en el siglo XVII para protegerse de piratas invasores. Desde ésta colina se puede divisar el mar al este. Éste castillo en forma de estrella cubría tres frentes defensivos. Desde luego, su ubicación no sería obra de la casualidad o la improvisación.

The preservation is evident. Around the main courtyard there are some rooms that work as a small museum where some weapons and tools of that time are exposed.

La conservación es evidente. Alrededor del patio principal están unas recámaras que funcionan como un pequeño museo donde se exponen algunas armas y herramientas de ésa época.

There are a couple of paintings that represent some of the characters of Venezuelan history that were in that place.

Hay un par de pinturas que representan algunos de los personajes de la historia venezolana que estuvieron en ése lugar.

Still on the same level is a cistern, which is a place to store water. In the image you can see that some people have the belief to make a wish after throwing a coin.

Aún en el mismo nivel está un aljibe, que es un lugar para poder almacenar agua. En la imagen puede verse que algunos tienen la creencia de pedir un deseo luego de arrojar una moneda.

In the background you can see the entrance to a dungeon where Mrs. Luisa Cáceres de Arismendi was held, as shown by a small plaque above the door frame.

En el fondo se puede ver la entrada a un calabozo donde estuvo detenida la señora Luisa Cáceres de Arismendi, tal como lo expone una pequeña placa encima del marco de la puerta.

There is also a display of war material from the time.

También se exhibe material bélico de la época.

We used the ramp to go up to the upper level, where the cannons were used to protect the city. This castle was later used as a warehouse, headquarters and from 1965 it was declared a National Monument. Now, we can take advantage of the amazing view towards the city of La Asunción and the sea. You can also see the Atamo Valley and the Guayamurí and Matasiete hills.

Usamos la rampa para subir al nivel superior, donde se usaban los cañones para proteger la ciudad. Éste castillo fue usado posteriormente como almacén, cuartel general y desde 1965 fue declarado Monumento Nacional. Ahora, podemos aprovechar la asombrosa vista hacia la ciudad de La Asunción y el mar. También se ve el valle de Atamo y los cerros Guayamurí y Matasiete.

A marked contrast between the tranquility that one feels, and the intense moments of battles of the past.
