đ€"Where to? What is that?" That's how I reacted when they told me we were going to Punta Ballena (Ballena means Whale). Actually, I didn't know what they were talking about, but they seemed very excited about it, so I bought the idea. Good thing I did, because it was an unforgettable time. At 4:00 p.m. on a cloudy day we arrived at the "Punta Ballena" lighthouse, located in the La Caranta sector of the town of Pampatar, in Margarita. The road is very good, clean and with the last stretch with a privileged view of the sea. When you get out of the vehicle it is inevitable to fix your gaze on the lighthouse for several seconds. You have several elements to admire in its twenty-eight meters high: aesthetic design, nice colors, good foundations.... In fact, that's the tourist part of the complex, where some state institutions dealing with national security and maritime control operate.
A las 4:00 p.m. de un dĂa nublado llegamos al Faro "Punta Ballena", ubicado en el sector La Caranta del poblado de Pampatar, en Margarita. La carretera es muy buena, limpia y con el Ășltimo tramo con una privilegiada vista al mar. Al bajar del vehĂculo es inevitable fijar tu mirada en el faro durante varios segundos. Tienes varios elementos quĂ© admirar en sus veintiocho metros de altura: diseño estĂ©tico, colores agradables, buenos cimientos... "ÂżEn serio podemos entrar?" Claro, de hecho, Ă©sa es la parte turĂstica del complejo, donde funcionan algunos instituciones del Estado que tienen que ver con la seguridad nacional y el control marĂtimo.
I had never been inside a lighthouse before. I only remember seeing them inside in movies, so we were excited. The first thing you see when you enter is a store selling souvenirs and gifts indigenous to the area. Small, simple and cozy.
Nunca habĂa entrado a un faro. SĂłlo recuerdo haberlos visto por dentro en pelĂculas, asĂ que estĂĄbamos emocionados. Lo primero que se ve al entrar es una tiendas de recuerdos y regalos autĂłctonos de la zona. Pequeño, sencillo y acogedor.
On one side you have the staircase that goes around the inner walls of the lighthouse. By the way, there is a lot of echo. So if you are one of those specimens who laughs hard all the time, watch out! Stay away from good jokes because you can deafen anyone here. Every few flights of steps you find the exits to the little balconies we saw from outside. We went out on each and every one of them. To photograph the view from there, some personal photos and breathe the sea breeze. Quite an experience.
A un lado tienes la escalera que va rodeando las paredes internas del faro. Por cierto, hay mucho eco. AsĂ que si eres de los especĂmenes que se suelen reĂrse duro todo el tiempo, ÂĄcuidado! AlĂ©jate de los buenos chistes porque aquĂ podrĂĄs ensordecer a cualquiera. Cada ciertos tramos de escalones encuentras las salidas a los pequeños balcones que vimos desde afuera. Salimos en todos y cada uno de ellos. A fotografiar la vista desde allĂ, algunas fotos personales y respirar la brisa marina. Toda una experiencia.
As you walk along the eight balconies, you can have views of the coast of Porlamar, see part of the town of Pampatar and its castle, and a little further away, the Cerro El Copey.
A medida que vas conociendo los ocho balcones, puedes tener vistas a la costa de Porlamar, ver parte del poblado de Pampatar y su castillo, y un poco mĂĄs lejos, el Cerro El Copey.
Already in the last stretch there is a kind of panoramic viewpoint. An impressive 360° view. You can observe everything around you with a few movements of your head and eyes, while the constant breeze hits your body. You can see the very nice residential complexes, the sea and its refined colors, the infinite sky, and also the parked vehicles.... How high we are! Unbelievable...
Ya en el Ășltimo tramo hay una especie de mirador panorĂĄmico. Una vista de 360° impresionante. Puedes observar todo lo que estĂĄ a tu alrededor con unos pocos movimientos de la cabeza y los ojos, mientras la constante brisa impacta tu cuerpo. Puedes ver los muy bonitos conjuntos residenciales, el mar y sus refinados colores, el infinito cielo, y tambiĂ©n los vehĂculos estacionados... ÂĄCuĂĄn alto estamos! IncreĂble...
Just above our heads is the lighthouse lamp. We were told it is capable of illuminating for over twenty nautical miles. Do you know how much that is? I don't. But it sounds like it's pretty powerful. Well, homework.
Justo encima de nuestras cabezas se encuentra la lĂĄmpara del Faro. Nos dijeron que es capaz de iluminar por mĂĄs de veinte millas nĂĄuticas. ÂżSaben cuĂĄnto es eso? Yo no. Pero suena como si fuera muy potente. Bueno, tarea para la casa.
