Paste the link onto an empty line. It becomes the video there and then, and it plays while you write, so you find out you pasted the wrong one now rather than after publishing.
You can also press / and pick Video or embed if you would rather paste
into the block itself.
Pasting a link into the middle of a sentence does what you would expect and makes it a link, not a video.

Paste the normal link from the address bar or the share button. You do not need an "embed code" and you should not paste one — the plain link is what the block wants.
If the link is not one we recognise, the block says so instead of publishing a broken frame.
A 3speak.tv/watch/… link is the one the block recognises and still cannot
play: it publishes as a plain link rather than a player, and the block tells you
so when you paste it. 3Speak videos in posts imported from
Hive are a different thing and play as normal — those
arrive as embeds, not as links.
Anything else
Use the HTML block and paste the embed code the service gives you. It is published exactly as you wrote it. See the HTML block.
Be a bit careful with what you paste there: an embed from a service that loads slowly will make your post load slowly too, and readers on a phone feel that long before they see your writing.
A note on video and your readers
A video sitting at the top of a post is the most expensive thing on the page for someone reading on hotel wifi. It is worth asking whether the video is the story or the souvenir. If it is the souvenir, put it near the bottom.
