Hello and welcome back to our Travel Hive channel. Today we are presenting to you a medieval castle which is a hotel nowadays. . Could Otočec Castle be the most romantic hotel in Slovenia? The first view certainly makes a convincing argument. The castle stands in one of those rare settings that seems almost too dreamlike to be real. A medieval silhouette rises from a small island in the middle of the Krka River, framed by giant trees, slow-moving water and more swans than any fairytale strictly requires. Add two wooden bridges and the quiet of the surrounding park, and the scene feels almost suspiciously perfect.

Otočec Castle is impressive from every perspective.

Our windows looked towards the Krka River and castle park. This connection with the water is one of the strengths of staying here, as every room and suite enjoys a view towards the river, park or one of the island’s bridges. The bed and pillows were very comfortable, and the generous size of the suite made it easy to settle in rather than simply sleep and leave.

Then there were bubbles. We started with mimosas before moving on to coffee, a decision for which we feel no need to apologize. Few places make a leisurely glass of sparkling wine in the morning feel as natural as a castle in the middle of a river.

Guests looking for complete privacy can also have breakfast served in their room.

Our Six-Course Dinner

We chose the six-course tasting menu and enjoyed the experience enough to give it a separate article. Our complete Otočec Castle Restaurant review is currently in preparation and will be published soon. The dinner deserves room for the individual dishes, the wine pairing and the story behind the ingredients, rather than being compressed into a few paragraphs here.

Among the six courses, the black orzo was a particularly memorable expression of the kitchen’s creativity. Coloured and flavoured with squid ink, it immediately transported us towards the coast. Pickled lemon cut through its richness, while miso foam added depth without covering the flavour of the sea. Fried tentacles and tender squid completed the dish with contrasting textures

The Castle Park, River and Organic Garden

Otočec Castle would still be a beautiful hotel without its park. With it, the stay becomes something more.

Century-old trees shade the paths, the Krka River moves slowly around the island and swans gather along the banks with almost theatrical timing. They are more than beautiful residents of the river. The swans have become a living icon of Otočec Castle, appearing in its atmosphere as naturally as the towers, bridges and reflections on the water.

Things to Do Beyond the Castle

One of Otočec’s quiet luxuries is that a single step out of the castle places you directly in its magnificent park.

Secret Spa and the Wellness Dilemma

Beautiful in its current form, the Knights’ Room made us imagine an intimate castle spa with direct access to the rear terrace.

What We Loved Most

  • The extraordinary island setting and views across the Krka River
  • The calm that settles over the castle after dark
  • Friendly, attentive staff and a polished arrival
  • Thoughtful room presentation and excellent turndown service
  • Drinkable tap water and the encouragement to refill in the room
  • Spacious Junior Suite with comfortable bedding and a view towards the Krka
  • Breakfast in the castle courtyard
  • Seasonal cuisine and the organic garden philosophy
  • The intimate Secret Spa concept
  • Intimate scale, with only 16 rooms and suites
  • Easy walks beneath old trees among swans and ducks

What Could Be Better

  • Mechanical noise below our Junior Suite disturbed part of the night
  • A bathtub with an integrated shower may be inconvenient for older guests
  • The off-site pool and saunas at Hotel Šport do not match the atmosphere or exclusivity of the castle
  • The castle itself lacks a gym and enough indoor activities for a longer stay
  • The castle bar closes early for guests who enjoy a late evening drink
  • We would love to see part of the edible garden brought closer to the castle

Final Thoughts: Is Otočec Castle Worth It?

Quiet corridors and centuries-old walls make every return to the room feel like part of the castle experience.
