If you travel through Bangkok, there's no way you would miss the Khaosan Road area. That's where we just went! Phra Sumen Fort, the Chao Phraya River front fort built in 1783 where lots of lots of good food around and literally just mins walk from that popular Khaosan Road. Besides my favourite Indian food place 'Karim Roti Mataba' , this Kanom Bueng Mae Prapa is also one of the must visits in the area!

Kanom Bueng Mae Prapa (ขนมเบื้องแม่ประภา)

The place went is totally one of the most famous ones in the area and one of the reason is because they have been open for generations! Kanom Bueng Mae Prapa..
Kanom Bueng (ขนมเบื้อง) is Thai style crispy pancake that actually almost looks like tacos somehow I would say.. topped with sweeten coconut or salted ones then a bit of spring onions! Mae Prapa (แม่ประภา) is the name of the one started the place and this delicious awesome snack recipe.. It's been a while so, the person's passed..

Old-fashioned Kanom Bueng

They have the newer version which is more common nowadays with Thai style whipped cream (whipped egg white with sugar..).
This one we're talking is an old-fashioned Kanom Bueng or we call it 'Kanom Bueng Boran(ขนมเบื้องโบราณ)' that has just these salted/sweeten shredded coconut, dry small shrimps, dry persimmon, Foi Thong but no whipped cream..

Foi Thong (ฝอยทอง) an old-school sweet influenced by Portuguese culture. Noodle like sweet Made with egg yolk and sugar..

This old-fashioned Thai crispy pancake is pretty rare to find. Especially the ones with the whole shop just for itself like this one..Though, it's not a big fancy shop. They divide the shop equally into 2 areas. On the left is the snack making station and on the right has a few seats for you to sit and enjoy the Thai snacks!

I love how easy-going the atmosphere is and also how happy the people are there. Look at his smile! :)

Sweet and salty..

We got 2 choices either the sweet or salty Kanom Bueng..

  • Salty Kanom Bueng (orange) : Salted shredded coconut, ground dry shrimps, spring onions and somehow tastes kinda spicy because they got a bit of black pepper in them.
  • Sweet Kanom Bueng (yellow) : Sweeten shredded coconut, Foi Thong, dry persimmon
I myself somehow love the sweet one much more..

If you're ever in the area around Khaosan Road or Rattanakosin Island here in Bangkok, After enjoy the awesome Indian food 'Karim Roti Mataba, I would totally recommend you check out this place! Come for a few pieces of this authentic Thai snack 'Kanom Bueng'.
Oh! almost forget about the price.. It's 12 THB a piece!
