You can actually find real mushrooms in Utah but not in spring when we are visiting, so what's up with that title? We visited toadstood hoodoos (I spare you from having to look it up: it translates to the german "Erdpyramide"). A toadstool is a spire-like feature with a boulder perched atop of a pedestral rock, giving it the look of a mushroom. It forms when softer rock erodes away, leaving a column sheltered from wind and water. East of Kanab there is a place that offers the perfect conditions for toadstool development.

Initially we wanted to visit the north rim of the grand canyon today but realized that we're still in winter season and the less touristic route is not opened yet. We first had to reschedule our plans over a coffee while the kids enjoyed a desert called "death by chocolate". The reason why I could not take a picture of this chocolate cake base, chocolate mousse topping with vanilla ice cream and melted chocolate on top is that I was too busy trying to get a taste myself before it was gone. The kids wanted to just stay home and only the parents visited the toadstool. We only made a quick trip to some local shops where I realized that we are slowely morphing into cowboys and cowgirls.

On our way back we experienced one of the frequent sand storm, which was followed by rain which is rather rare in this region. I still find sand in place where it clearly does not belong...

For those of you who made it all the way to the end of this post I share a few pictures from the road just to share the magic of this place.
