We arrived on the main island of Åland from Brändö via Torsholma-Hummelvik on the M/S Alfågeln at 23.30.

The trip took about 2.5 hours and on the whole an enjoyable way to travel. Dogs are not allowed in the café however there is a lounge at the lower part of the ferry. We opted for sitting on a covered part of the deck. Even though it is quite nosy for some dogs including our golden retriever it is the best spots for the journey.

The café offers coffee,  soft drinks, snacks and alcohol for those interested.

Where to stay on arrival

We had planned to travel directly to Mariehamn but because we arrived quite late we opted to park up in the harbour car park.

There were other motorhomes already parked up so we felt comfortable parking there also.

The night was very quiet until about 6 in the morning when the other motorhomes left to catch the early morning ferry to Brändö. I would highly recommend the harbour car park if you arrive late in the evening. It is quiet, safe and the toilets are open and more importantly clean.

Conclusion

Travelling around the Finnish Archipelago has its challenges, however my best advice is to give yourself lots of options. If you want to travel organically and take a chance you will find a hidden gem. Don't allow yourself to expect ever ferry to fit your timetable. We were meant to make our return journey to the mainland of Finland from Åland 2 days ago. However, the ferry was full and so we will leave on the next available ferry. Vanlife is about compromising in every part of your journey as well as personal relationships with fellow travellers or partners.
