His reign was marked by military campaigns, diplomacy and the strengthening of the Orthodox faith. Towards the end of his life, Stefan Nemanja stepped down from the throne and became a monk under the name Simeon in the Studenica monastery, and later he moved to Sveta Gora, where he founded the Hilandar monastery together with his son Sveti Sava.

Like any great artistic and historical undertaking, the monument to Stefan Nemanja caused different reactions.
