Run Ads and Partner with Affiliates

My name is Chris Oberman. Together with my wife and son, we move to a different country every two years.

This is why I started my travel blog named Moving Jack. I recently started running ads and partnering with affiliate programs.

When I look at what gets the most traffic, it's writing about under-explored topics. My articles on Iraq and some about China tend to do best. Especially when you're just starting out, it's important to find topics that have low competition. If no one has written about it, then Google must place you on top because you're the only one.

Build from there, get backlinks, and start working your way up to higher competition keywords.

Sell Unused Assets to Stock Sites

Travel blogs often generate a lot of unused assets--photos, itineraries, and video clips. You can sell these to stock sites like Shutterstock or Adobe Stock or license your writing to travel apps, magazines, or tourism boards. For example, a hotel booking app might pay $200 to feature your "Best Boutique Hotels in Kyoto" list.

Another great option is syndicating your content. Some media outlets will pay to republish your articles (with proper attribution). Just be cautious about selling exclusive rights unless the price is right. This strategy allows you to turn old posts into recurring income without extra effort, helping you make money from existing content.

Host Press Trips and Curated Tours

Hosting press trips or curated tours is one of the more overlooked ways to turn a travel blog into a proper business. If you already have an audience that trusts your recommendations and looks to you for insight, you're in a good position to take it a step further and offer them something personal and experiential. It turns passive readers into paying participants who want to travel with someone they already connect with. That's where the real value comes in.

License Your Visuals for Revenue

If you are a creator who excels in photography or video, licensing your visuals can become a significant revenue stream. Travel blogs naturally place you in locations from which brands and publications are already trying to source content. If your work is strong and consistent, there's no reason it should be limited to your blog or Instagram. Businesses are constantly seeking high-quality content to use in campaigns, email banners, or even print materials, and they often don't have someone on the ground capturing what you're already shooting.

Leverage Social Media Partnerships

The best way to turn a travel blog into a proper business is through social media partnerships, but it needs to be handled with structure. Too many bloggers treat Instagram or TikTok like a separate hobby, but if your blog and social accounts aren't working together, you're leaving money on the table. Travel content is visual, and brands are constantly looking for creators who can show their destinations or services in motion. That's where the value is--being able to offer exposure across both the blog and the platforms where people actually spend their time scrolling.

Collaborate on Limited-Edition Travel Products

Consider collaborating with travel brands for limited-edition products tied to your blog's identity. For instance, rather than selling standard merchandise like T-shirts or mugs, you could design a line of sustainable, high-quality travel accessories that align with your values. Think eco-friendly bags or bespoke travel kits created in collaboration with ethical brands. This not only generates income but also strengthens your blog's connection to a community of like-minded travelers.

I've seen bloggers partner with eco-conscious companies to create exclusive products that reflect both their style and their values. A travel kit, for example, could include items like biodegradable toiletries or reusable water bottles. The key is to find a partner whose products enhance your blog's image and appeal to your specific audience. This kind of collaboration provides both a unique product and a chance to engage your followers in a deeper, more personal way.

Offer Exclusive Travel Experiences

Selling exclusive travel experiences, such as guided tours or private retreats, can be an excellent way to monetize your blog. If you've built a loyal audience who shares your travel interests, why not invite them to join you on a one-of-a-kind adventure? Whether it's a weekend in a remote destination or a guided hiking trip through a hidden gem, offering an experience is an immersive way to generate income while sharing your passion for travel.

Travel bloggers can turn their followers into clients by offering tailored trips, like private hiking tours or small group travel experiences to places they've written about. For example, if you often write about local culture or nature spots, you could curate an experience where your readers accompany you. These exclusive experiences can command a premium price, and they also help build stronger bonds with your audience.

Provide Personalized Travel Planning Services

An effective way to monetize a travel blog is through offering personalized travel planning services. Many readers trust bloggers for recommendations, so why not take it a step further by offering custom travel itineraries tailored to specific destinations or experiences? For a fee, you can design detailed travel plans that include accommodation suggestions, restaurant recommendations, and unique activities, all based on your personal experience and expertise.

I've seen bloggers turn this into a profitable service by tapping into their audience's trust. For example, if your blog focuses on off-the-beaten-path adventures, you can offer personalized itineraries for travelers looking to explore less touristy destinations. By providing a service that aligns with your blog's content, you not only monetize your expertise but also give your readers a more tailored and valuable experience. It's a way to turn your passion into a business that genuinely helps others.

Create Hyper-Specific Digital Products

For monetizing a travel blog, create a hyper-specific digital product like an interactive Google Maps itinerary for offbeat spots, such as hidden gems in Slovenia or secret surf coves in Portugal, selling for $15 to $30 each. Pair that with niche affiliate partnerships, like PackSavvy Solutions for packing cubes or BioLite for solar gadgets, earning 10 to 20% per sale. Offer a $10/month membership for exclusive travel hacking tips, like stacking airline miles with certain credit cards. From my prototyping experience, test small: launch one product, track conversions with Hotjar, and tweak what works. Scale by collaborating with local guides for unique content drops. Solve real traveler problems with stuff they can't just find on Google.

Focus on Building a Loyal Audience

To monetize a travel blog, you need to first focus on building a loyal audience that trusts your content. Once you have that foundation, you can make money through affiliate marketing by promoting travel products and services that align with your niche. You can also consider sponsored posts where brands pay you to feature their services. Additionally, selling digital products like guides, e-books, or photography can provide a steady stream of income and add value for your readers.

Build a Strong and Niche Site

To monetize a travel blog successfully, I start by building a strong and niche site. For example, a luxury travel blog or an eco-tourism blog requires content that speaks directly to travelers interested in those subjects. This might include destination guides, reviews, and travel stories that highlight the special features of these destinations. The next step is to drive consistent traffic to the blog, employing SEO strategies so that my content ranks high in search engines. The more relevant content I create, the higher the chances that organic search traffic visitors will find my blog.

Affiliate marketing is one of the most rewarding ways to monetize. I affiliate with brands or services that include hotels, airlines, or travel gear companies and include affiliate links to their products or services within travel articles on my blog. When my readers click the links and make a purchase, I earn a commission. Sometimes, I write sponsored content, where brands pay me to write about their services or destinations. These partnerships can be quite rewarding, especially as I build credibility within the travel space.

Also, another major income stream could be creating products of my own. I could build and sell digital products: eBooks, itineraries for travel, or detailed destination guides that offer added value to my readers. Another option could involve building an online training course or providing paid consultations about travel. Such services will enable me to relate to my audience, make recommendations, and earn money at the same time.
