TO THE DEAD OF THE INDIAN ARMIES WHO FELL AND ARE HONOURED
India Gate, New Delhi is one of the largest war memorials in India, an iconic monument standing as a tribute to heroism, sacrifice and service. It is a must to visit place if you are in New Delhi, so that was our next destination after Raj Ghat. The vehicle parking is almost half a mile away, but its comfortable to walk as they have put barricades and no vehicles are allowed inside.
This was earlier known as Rajpath and has been revamped as Kartavya Path ( Path of duty) - the three kilometer stretch from Rashtrapati Bhavan to India Gate. This is where the Republic Day ceremony happens every year and I am sure, you must have seen this on TV, but its all together a different experience to be there.
Mom was tired, but still the excitement to see this physically was keeping her smile - this was on our way from the parking, as we entered. There were some photographers near the gate, asking to provide service by taking our photos in our camera, charging ₹30 rupees, and I was a little scared to not take their service, what if they run away !!! So we decided to move on our own and let me share some photographs taken by this novice photographer.
The base of the monument is nicely decorated with flowers.
Some close-up snaps.
The statue of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose installed in 2022, during his 125th birth anniversary - I strongly feel, had this man be the Prime Minister, India would have been a lot different. But that's another topic for debate.
A zoomed close up of the India Gate clearly shows the scripts that glorifies our history.
Coming back I found someone who was holding a SLR, so requested to take one snap of both of us - a memory for my life at least.
A distance view as we were coming back.
Finally Mom said she needs to sit for some time before we go anywhere. Interestingly, another photographer came and requested me to take his service for taking my photo and give him some money. Even though I consistently denied, he was after me, saying he has not earned anything the entire day. So finally I got pity on him and agreed - I am happy to pay people who offer to work in exchange - reflects some sort of dutifulness in them. He told he will charge ₹30 per picture and I was like that's too much man, taking it in my camera only. Finally the deal was done for ₹20 per picture - ₹100 for five photos. As mom was sitting, we went again to the Kartavya Path though the distance now was bigger. The guy clicked 10 different pictures, directing me to stand in different styles and after that asked ₹200. This is where the Indian mindset applies probably - taking all opportunities for own benefit. I said, I will keep only five (one on the top and four below) and give you ₹100 - whatever I committed. The guy has got the skill - after seeing the clicks, I realized I should have taken his service earlier. Still it's risky to hand over such a costly gadget to someone unknown.
After leaving the place, the driver recommended to go to Hotel but we decided to visit the area covering Rashtrapati Bhavan and Parliament, as we did not have any plans to spend more time at New Delhi in this trip - I will keep them for my next post.....
